whats the downside of having a stock silencer with no packing in it? Do I need to worry about anything?

Nope. That is a packing-free silencer....Great design!

Wait, no.

The 89 - 94 silencer has replaceable packing. Running without it will decrease performance and increase noise levels. Repack it, please.

will it matter much performance wise if I just ride my bike in the woods? I'm not racing it or anything like that.

Yes... you need to repack it.

It's really no big deal. You can use any type of universal packing, or get the pre-formed packing from an OEM parts supplier. Just do it!

please repack even it's just cheap house insulant from the hardware store (does the job just fine), keep the noise down and you won't piss off another tree huger  that can potentially close more trails (even if you ride on private property)
Not far from here, the state or some other "authority", had a place, a PRIVATE place, shut down because of noise and dust complains... :butthead:

could anybody recommend a good overall silencer for my bike if I decide to get a new one instead of using my stock one? my bike has a FMF cold series pipe on it already.

No matter what silencer you have or get... you will still have to repack it. The stock H Series KDX silencer is the only one I know of that does not require packing.

I would stick with the stock one if I were you .....

The stock silencer works as well as an aftermarket one, is quieter, and you already have it! :supz:

The silencer/sa on the E series bikes is actually a really nice unit. I wouldn't bother switching it out unless yours is damaged beyond repair. They're really easy to repack too.
