FMF pipe issue

My kdx has a 14" FMF pipe with about a 1" gash/dent about 1" from the end so I took muffler apart to see about welding it

2 questions I have

the packing in there only fills up about half...is that right?

can I just cut the muffler down to a 12", cutting off the damage? then replace with new packing

thanks

If it is a turbine core, the inner tube/bulkhead constuction will make that a bit challenging, but not that difficult.

If it is a Powercore, I think it's a straight through tube, and shortening it will just make it a bit louder (less absorbtion).

Is it less work to modify it or fix it?
How about you just work the dent outta the can now that it is apart.
Or is it made of the aluminum extrusion?

its a powercore, inner tube runs strait up middle with thousands of 1/8"holes in it...I already cut the damage off only had to cut 1 3/4 inches off, then make inner tube 1/2 inch shorter, rerolled the packing around inner tube and done. muffler still has same amout of packing cause at 14 inches there was only about 11" of packing in there. thanks
