Front rim help - opinions & availability?

Post by SS109 »

OK, I was happy as can be today. New tires, Tubliss, going to get'r done. Well, pulled the old tire and tube off and started cleaning the rim and found something that just ruined my day. I have hairline cracks on both sides of the rim at the factory weld joint.

Anyways, is it safe to ride on this rim now? I don't really jump or catch big air. I just want to be able to ride until I can source a new rim. On that note, where can I get a rim? It is a '90 with the factory KDX wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't mess with a old stock replacement rim at that point.... Get a NEW aftermarket rim.....

BTW, I did find that the '96 KX500 shows the same part number for just the front rim itself.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier as I already pulled the trigger on one from Ebay. $50 shipped on a BIN I just couldn't let it get away.

No worries. I will put this on ebay unless someone else here wants it.

My front wheel arrived today however I am just a tad concerned.

The seller said it came off of a '90 KDX200 but he has the rim tagged '90 KDX220. The rim does not have a rimlock, has heavier spokes, and does not have the same rim as my original. The rim is marked...

D.I.D. Japan
1.60x21
86--08--09
J 21x1.60
1 86 DOT

The hub does look the same but I would have to pull my rim from the bike to be 100% sure at this point.

So, what do guys think? Replacement rim or is this from another year completely? Will I be good to go or ??? I can post pics if needed!

Hmm. Well there was no kdx220 in 1990, so that's obviously false. As far as I know my 89 and 90 came with tagasako (excel) rims.

Let me take a peek at the 90 in the garage and see what's on it. I'm sure it'll work fine so long as the hub is the same. Sounds to me like someone replaced the rim and spokes with aftermarket. Certainly not a bad thing! D.I.D. rims are just fine IMO.

*edit*

I have a 90 and 94 front end in the garage. Both tagasako, neither have rim locks. Dunno if this helps....
