What would you do?

Post by Dale »

I have an "extra" 98 220 cylinder that is in need of some welding to fix a groove and replating. I was wondering.....if you had an extra one what would you do to it? I have a Gnarly woods pipe, stock carb, FMF silencer, Boysen reeds, air box lid removed, That's about it. Money is a consideration, but if it wasn't...what would you do? By the way, I want it to rip! Love the bike. Just looking for even more power.

Sure...

I have a spare and it needs replated. I bought it to have one ready to go on the next rebuild. I haven't gotten around to sending it in yet but that was the plan.

Regardless of money....time is on your side.

I'd get a piston and send it and the cylinder to the plater.
Then find a spare head and send it to Ron B.
Maybe a spare carb and send it off to Ron.

After a while you'd have a box at your house that would make that 220 fly!

I would have it mildly ported to help out the factory 220 shortcomings....Head setup to match. For me I'd probaly have it setup for race gas too. One stock cyl, and one modded cyl on hand when done. Prolly only bolt the stocker on if heading to a place where gas mileage is of utmost concern.

Your question is funny, stating money is a consideration, then asking what to do if you had unlimited funds. But its ok to dream, right?

If money wasn't a consideration, I would stop wasting money on an old bike. I would buy a KTM.

Otherwise I would probably do what your doing....

NewMexico, could never bring myself to by a KTM. What I did buy was a 09 KX250F and Gave the KDX to my son. Andd the part about the money was typed as my wife was looking over my shoulder at what I was up to!!!! I currently have 5 bikes and will probably buy a sixth, 10 KX250F for my son this summer. What I'm really looking for is the mod that someone thinks is the absolute best for the bike.

Thanks to everyone so far for the ideas. Keep them coming.

It's no KDX! I put a 49 tooth rear sproket on it to replace the stock 48. Still not enough low speed to crawl on tight single track. I'm going to try a 50. Some say that is the ticket. I raced hare scrambles years ago and love tight single track at high speed. The kx250f is very good at speed, but sucks at slow gnarly stuff. Stalls alot unless you slip the crap out of the clutch. Love it on the track, but love my KDX in the woods. Tried to get advice on a fly wheel weight for the 250, but it seems noone actually has tried it yet. Alot of 250 owners suggested that on Thumpertalk for the woods, but no one had tried it or even knew anyone who had. Bottomline. KX250f not so great stock on the trails. I'll dial it in this summer. I'll have to, I gave my KDX to my Son!

Sell the four broke and buy another KDX?? I figure if you're not making money racing there's no reason to risk the rebuild costs for the four stroke. Just IMO, of course..

I'm kinda with you on the KTM. Just can't bring myself to do it. Looks like they might be going to a linkage rear for 2011 though, so maybe I'll have another look then. I currently have my eye all over the Maico 320. Oh my what a bike!
