cylinder head mounting bolts

Post by jbowens2401 »

On the 220, are the two mounting bolts that go through the cylinder head the same lenght? If not, does anyone know which bolt goes up front and which one goes in the back.

Thanks,

John

They are not the same length. The longer bolt goes into the front to compensate for the width of the bracket. You'll notice the bracket in the front is thicker.

Thanks...that's what I was afraid of, I put them in the wrong spot and the front bolt is barely flush with the nut. Do you think I should swap them around or leave them like they are?

Thanks,

John

I would because I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. You should be able to get to them by just removing the tank (and seat and shrouds and...)

make sure they're torques to spec too

Okay thanks, I will swap and torque them to spec...I think the manual said 33 ft lbs.

Thanks again,

Virtual Varmint,

I just went out to check the nuts and they are still tight...I will still swap them around tomorrow night and get them back to spec. One question, I rode the bike for about 20 minutes the other day before I noticed they might be swapped around. Could this potentially have done any damage? If so, what should I check for?

Thanks for the help,

John

Nah, if they held the engine in there for your ride, you're good. I'm sure you had enough meat on that front bolt to go for one ride.

That may be a good bolt to apply some locking agent. I didn't. :hmm:

Thanks for your help, I am going to apply some blue loctite tonight when I swap them around...that's a great idea. It would make for a rough ride if your engine fell out...that would really suck!

Thanks again,

John
