The Ultimate Modded KDX?

I just wanted to start a fun discussion about what would be your ultimate modded KDX? Reliability and low maintenance built in.

Here's mine....

Showa Conventional Forks /With Scott's Stabilizer
'E' series KDX motor
'H' frame
Pivot Pegs
Trials Tires
RB'd Head and carb
Woods FMF pipe
Stock S/A
All Armor (Rad Guards, Skid Plate etc...)
1 1/8" single bars
Clark Gas Tank

I think that's about it....

I think your pretty spot on except if your going to put a E series KDX motor into a H frame, why not go the rest of the way and put it into a late model KX frame and all the ergo and weight improvements that come with it? Aside from that it looks pretty well nailed.

Or take a 300 Punkin and paint it florescent green

I gues then it wouldn't really be a 'modded KDX?'

Inda, that list rocks....Only thing I woud add for myself is a complete spare cyl & head that's a race-gas 225, and a DF Cage.

My ultimate 'hybrid' would be to find a blown up TM 200cc enduro w/ full Ohlins/Scotts, and install a E motor.

The weight has never been a concern of mine.....

The length of the KX and fork angle is not to my liking either. Turning radius and 19" rear turns me off. Really all I do is ride woods... never hit the track or race in an official race. I like the H ergo's.... I sit allot and the H is perfect for that!

I wouldn't mind trying a KX hybrid but until I do... I will stick with the H frame. I am not willing to make such a huge leap in faith that I will like it.

I think if you start with a 220, you would not need so many mods......

Inda's are spot on for me too, but I'd prolly use a KX125 frame IF I can get an 18" rear wheel on there. Otherwise the H frame will be the ticket. I'm rather fond of the comfort level of my E series bike though...

E series engine
carb/head by RB for pump gas
H series or KX125 frame
Forks, showa's would be nice, but KYB's are fine by me
Steering damper
Trials tire out back (of course)
some of them fancy rox risers for my 1 1/8" bars
wide pegs
skid plate, pipe gaurd, rad gaurds
Some nice black excel rims (yeah, little bling)
Woods pipe
Oversize tank
some of them dang grip warmers! It's COLD up here!

And I'd really like to try an auto clutch in a KDX that's NOT mine, jus so I can see how I like it.

A 300 engine in a KDX would be nice, or better yet a Gas Gas 300, I like 6 speeds.

Personally I don't understand the hybrid thing. The attraction of the KDX to me is the comfortible compact chassis.

I want to pretty much duplicate Inda's list with several differences like a 225 when my top end needs to be redone instead of the E engine.

Because a kx125 chassis is less compact??? Hrmmm.

The attraction of a hybrid is the smooth linear power plant of the KDX in a COMPACT lightweight flick-able frame. The KDX is rather bulky, any way you look at it.

I prefer the word "Comfy"

My goal is not how fast I get there but enjoying the trip.....

I agree completely. My KDX is without a doubt the most comfortable bike I've ever had the pleasure of riding. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to start on a hybrid. Can't stand that 2x4 like thing that passes for a seat on some of these modern bikes. Punkin's come to mind.

I don't find the KDX to be big, heavy, or bulky. The way it handles in the woods, it feels lighter, and handles way better than my RM125. The short rake, and quick handling of the KDX is a big attraction to me, and something you don't find in a mx bike.

As for my ultimate KDX, ask me in a year.
I don't know enough about them yet.

My 2000 KDX 200 is set up as follows:
RB head and new RB carb ( head set up for race fuel)
Bottom end rebuilt with Weisco parts
weisco piston
cylinder plating by Millenium plating
trials tire out back
Dunlop 952 up front
all the guards and skid plate
EFM auto clutch
Scotts steering dampner and upper triple clamp
FMF Gnarly pipe and SA
13-50 gearing
stock suspension reworked and resprung for my wt. (works great!!)
Pro Taper 1 1/8 bars (CR High bend with 1 1/2" cut off both ends)

I think that's about it
I basically rebuilt this bike from the ground up except for the bottom end and suspension. It has turned out to be an awesome woods bike :supz:

I had the opportunity to ride my old KDX the other day.

Aaaaaaahhhhh.....Nice!

I had sold it to a girl last year when I finished the hybrid.
It is a far more "comfortable" ride than my hybrid. My hybrid feels taller, skinnier, lighter, and stiffer.

To me the attraction to a hybrid is the KDX motor in a fast frame. There is no doubt I'm faster on the hybrid. I got numbers. There is no doubt I have to be in better physical condition and more agressive on the hybrid to really enjoy the ride. The hybrid is not as good for just plunking around.

One mod I would add to the above list is improved linkage bearings. Maybe CC's mod to the bottom of the shock, zerk fittings on the rest, possibly bushings instead of needle bearings...

A 125 MX bike is BIGGER than a KDX. Yes it's lighter and slimer, but also taller, longer wheel base, etc. Any way you look at it a physically bigger bike.
