Rear Spring ID - KDX220

Post by Byte »

How can I ID the existing rear spring installed on the bike?

I note the following part numbers and ratings for each of the available rear springs for the KDX:

92144A SPRING, SHOCKABSORBER, K=4.8 (BLUE)
92144B SPRING, SHOCKABSORBER, K=5.2 (BLUE)
92144C SPRING, SHOCKABSORBER, K=5.4 (BLUE)

What are the loading maximum weights for each of these springs?

And, I see on some modded kdx's - they have used a different type of tube (shorter tube) that pops out of the gas cap - in lieu of the stock tube that is fed down through the front stem.

What is this tube, why is it used and where can i get it?

yes that is pretty much what they do in my experience

they pop out and it's gone, and you get to have gas splashed all over you the rest of the day

BTW it's a vent hose

I had a short one, lost it

With the long one when it comes loose, you usually don't lose it

Do these springs have any ID (part#) stamped on them after they leave factory?

If so, where is it located?

Don't know if there is an ID # on the stock springs, but Race Tech says the stock rate is 5.0 kg/mm
http://old.racetech.com/evalving/menu/searchdirt.asp

I had MX-Tech rebuild/respring my shock and they installed a 5.2 kg/mm spring (200 lb rider). This is on my '98 KDX200 (should be the same for the 220 though).

So what are you trying to find out? Do you think you need a different spring?

There is also some info on Jeff Fredette's site. He tends to suggest slightly lighter spring rates than Race Tech.

On the vent tube - IMHO the long ones that stick down the steering stem are a pain. You can use a shorter hose with a check valve (lets air in but won't let fuel out if bike is tipped).

thanks tbird.

i am wanting to know what spring I have in my bike ( I know that I can get by with SAG mesaurements) but I simply want to be sure of what spring I have.

Why are the long vent tubes PIA?

Is there a part # for the shorter vent tube with the check valve?

Well, if they are threaded down tightly into the stem it makes it hard to twist the cap off (cap twists, vent hose doesn't). Here is what I meant, should be available anywhere though

If the shock spring appears to be stock, I think it's safe to assume it's 5.0 kg/mm. I doubt anyone would use a Kawasaki spring to change the rate as they are 250 bucks vs 110 for an aftermarket one.
