Opening the airbox up?

Post by raisedinal »

On 4 strokes its common to open the airbox to flow more air when exhaust has been changed and jetting for more power...But don't see much talk about it with the KDX? I just sent my head and carb to RB for his work and was curious if I'd benifit any from opening the restrictions of airflo in the airbox. If not now with stock exhaust maybe when I get a pipe down the road?

Any Thoughts?

A lot of people discard the whole lid.
Some people just remove the rubber snorkle from the lid.
Others remove the snorkle and double the size of the opening the snorkle went in.

You'll get some benefit frm opening the airbox up, if you rejet.

More hit off bottom with the lid pitched, every model I've owned back to the air-cooled models.

Also makes it sound like a goose

I prefer my modded lid to no lid at all

I have plenty of bottom end

I don't have a problem removing the lid, (I'd try that over cutting it to see if I like the results.

about how much jet change has been required to compensate? Up one Main jet?

pitched the whole lid! The bike's exhaust even sounds different with the lid removed! I did that and reeds at the same time. Can't remember what jets I have in it to be honest but its not far off from stock. Might as well have yourself a little selection of jets anyway. There is a ton of info about jetting on this site with pictures of plug chops everything.

The air box had a lid? I thought it was a Frisbee!

I took it off my bike within about a month of owning the bike.

Honk..HONK HOOOONK! HOOOONK!!!

I hate that racket. Even if it does run better (not my opinion), I'd gladly give up whatever was gained to NOT hear that stinking noise all day long.

My 4BBL 'kicks in' when I kick it. None'a this vacuum modulated/AVS sissy-crap on my rig.

But...an under-geared over-driven final drive puny-horsepowered POS that someone thinks sounds cool when they floor the pedal?

You're right. I hate that noise, too.

The only thing bout that lil 340 that would scare me is whether the car it's attached to will stop or turn to keep it from killing us. :partyman:

2-strokes sure can make a lot of intake noise. In karting (not where I race) sometimes these baffled air boxes are manditory for noise reduction....And that's a reduction that can be measured with a DB meter at distance combined w/ exhaust note! Out of a lil 100cc!

The KDX does seem to have quite a 'quack' to it. My WR isn't nearly as bad, well, not as annoying, but louder. I never minded the duck under my seat....It tickled.
