Kdx 220 Stall

Post by Byte »

Riding on my track in my back yard and experienced stalling.

Any thoughts why this may be happening?

Yes, fuel is in tank with petcock in 'ON' postion.

Loose spark plug cap?
Pinched gas tank vent hose?
Trash in gas tank?

Could be all kinds of things.....

How slow are you going when it stalls? I only ask this because this is happening in your backyard.

Are you at low RPMs when it happens? High RPMs? While you're crossing the curb on your patio?

Does the bike die or just stall and light back up? If it dies does it start right back up?

THnaks boys.

Slow RPM up an incline.

I am riding on 5 acres of land with a ready made bike track in place - amongst trees, mud and dirt.

I will check all above this weekend.

Thoughts?

You're on a 2t, remember? Slow rpm up an incline and you probably need to be feathering the clutch a bit to get that "slow rpm" up a bit. Of course, I haven't got much of a description, but I'm guessing you're just bogging it out.

No problem Byte. Keep in mind, that is an uneducated guess. I'm not sure exactly what's going on without seeing it myself. I'm sure glad you were riding that thing anywhere though!! Congrats on keepin' on with it!

See that thing on the right side of your handlebar?

Twist it!

LMAO WIBBENS!

And then, take that punkin back to the punkin patch. I think the KDX is getting offended at having to share space with a big orange yuppie bike :butthead:

The 09 KTM300 has basically the exact same carburator on it (same since 88 on the KDX)...Learn how to tune it/them.

THasnk boys.

I love the KDX. It feels like a jaguar - with the plush feeling and planted feel on the ground.

I agree - the KTM can be seen as 'yuppie' bike.

Time for a ride :-)

Just pokin fun man. I've loved every KTM I've ever ridden, except for the super harsh suspension. I'm sure that could be remedied easily enough, were it MY bike to tweak on. I look to have a 200 or 300 xc at some point in time, should my limited budget ever allow.

No worries Juliened - :partyman:

I still have issues with my kdx220.

When I rode it yesterday, I wanted to twist that throttle but simply poofs out and dies - even in first gear on level ground. I do not know how to diagnose this problem.

Spark plug cap is tight.
Gas tank vent hose is not pinched.
Emptied and cleaned gas tank 2 weeks ago.

I admit I travel in between 1st and 2nd gear atm because track is not big enough to go faster. The bike stalls and dies - then have lots of trouble kick starting it again.

The attached photo shows my throttle cable (apologies for picture quality).

Image

The copper bent tube on top of the cap easily turns around and I do not know if this should be happening.

Also, I am not sure if the domed shaped steel sheath for cable should be more tightly snugged up to that copper tube.

The photo shows the cable slightly pulled away from the tube.

Thoughts?

Yeah, there's too much play in your throttle cable. Take out some slack using the adjuster by the throttle housing on the bars. But.... I don't think that is ALL of your problem. If giving it a good twist of the throttle makes it "poof" and die, it's likely either dangerously lean or WAYY to rich. Difficulty re-starting would indicate way to rich, unless it is starving for fuel somehow. Float valve sticking closed? Clogged up jets? what mix are you running?

Pull the carb apart and give it a good visual, clean, and re-assemble. It's ok if you've already done this, do it again!

THankS.

Should that steel sheath be attached/connected onto the bent tube (on top of cap)?

I disassembled my carbi 2 weeks ago and cleaned it.

Indications of being too rich?

I am running 40:1 ratio.

too rich - blubbering/drowning out
too lean - buhhwahhhhhh type of bog

Plug look black and wet when you pull it out? Or dry and white? Somewhere in between?

Sure SEEMS like fuel delivery.
