Front and Rear Tire Pressures

Post by Byte »

Both my tires have gone flat over long periods of non-use.

What should Front and Rear Tire Pressures be in this KDX220?

MAXXIS tires used.

ANd, spec says 0.7L but how much gear box oil is ideal in the case?

You can use the full quart of gear box oil. It'll be fine.
The choice of oil has been discussed a few times.

I run 8.5 psi rear and 9 front. I'm not telling you to do that, because I've been told over and over that I'm going to get a flat. Maybe one year, if I do get a flat, I'll change my ways. A lot of people run ~12 psi. I find that too hard and slippery. 15 psi is like riding on ice, to me. A lot depends on your riding area.
You do need a good gauge to read motorcycle tire pressure. Most standard tire gauges don't read very well that low.

You asked earlier about the fuel petcock- handle pointing down is fuel on.

You also mentioned your exhaust not sealing up into the cylinder well, you thought. That is an easy fix. Look around on here, I think someone else just went 'round the block on that. Not sealing should not effect compression when kicking, though. You sure you put your sparkplug back in?

Tire preasure:

It'a personnal choice, but for me, it's 11 for the front and 14 for the rear.

Yeah, I run 12 in the front and 8 in the rear and if I know it's gonna be rocky I'll up the front a couple pounds.

A week? a month?

Remove the spring valve assy in your tubes and clean them maybe they are dirty. Then put 30psi on both tires and let them sit overnight. When the morning come...go in the garage for a check. (if you have not slept in the garage)

Take the result. And decide if your tubes are junk or not.

Not uncommon for tubed tires..and certain to happen if you use natural rubber tubes over butyl.

I run 12 up front and 7-9 out back depending on conditions. I have a trials tire out back though, that does make a difference.....

I just rode 28 miles of rocks, mud, roots and leaves and had some of the best performance ever running 8 and 7  . Of course I checked the pressure right after getting off the trail, so I may have had a lucky day. I would normally run 12/10, but man low pressure kicks arse in the nasty stuff.

Lots of big square-edged holes where I ride, I need to run at least 13 front and rear or my tubes get pinched, and that's with heavy-duty enduro tubes.
