trials tire/gearing question

Post by jbowens2401 »

How will a trials tire (MT43) affect my gearing? I'm pretty sure it will make the gearing higher, but I don't know how much. Like dropping 1 or 2 teeth on the back or more like adding 1 on the front? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

The 803s we installed were just a bit larger in rolling radius than a standard Maxxis IT. So you get a bit more top speed, less torque for the same RPM. But it's not really noticable. We did NOT change the gearing for the trials tires. First is still really low, and top gear is fast enough for the fire roads/pavement when needed.

Both bikes have 803s and are:

1999 KDX220R - 13/47
2001 KDX220R - 13/47

We ride forest trails, single track, fire roads, open desert, dry lake beds, rocky mountainous terrain, etc. All in Southern California. About the only thing we don't get is nice black, loamy dirt, or mud. And I don't prefer deep sand, but that has nothing to do with the gearing or the tires.

What are you riding in?
What's the bike?

I ride in tight woods, steep hill climbs, and wide open fire roads here in Middle Tennessee. My bike is a 2005 KDX 220r with 13/47 gearing. For me, it's a bit tall, so I think I will try a 49t rear.

Thanks,

John

I run 13/49 (my bike) and 13/50 on my son's bike. Ride steep single track stuff. I think that is good gearing for where I ride plus still go plenty fast on the fireroads.
WR sold. Now have 03 and 04 KDX 220s.
KXF 250 forks. RB Carb and Head. FMF rev pipe. Long live the KDX !!!
