Hi my bike is stock at the moment and I have removed my snorkel the only change I have found is that it is noisy.I looked around on the net and there are a lot about removing it and finding loads more power i never found it.
Try it and see don't try to cut down the lid there are lot of owners out there looking for new lids to replace the ones that they cut up and found it gave problems.

Been riding off road for 10 years still finding out how best to do it.Riden a DR125 then a DT125R then a DR125 then DRZ400 then XR250 then a TE610 now I hope that I have found the best a KDX220 just to add the KDX has gone now riding a WR426 which I love and is so much better than the KDX.

Removing the snorkel and/or lid will give you some more airflow. You will need to re-jet afterwards to see any real performance gain, unless you're running rich to begin with.

I did this also in steps. I first removed the snorkel and rode it 10 or 15 times, got it jetted fairly good and was happy with things.
Last week I decided to cut off the back of the lid. Noticed two things......
First, it does run leaner which supports the theory that the lid is restrictive.
Second, I noticed that there is not one very dirty spot on the filter. I suspect that the smaller opening for the snorkel causes a fast stream of air that hits the filter in one spot. When you open the lid, the incoming air does not favor one spot on the filter.
