KDX 220 cylinder question
I picked up a '97 KDX 220 a week ago. It needed a few things: tires, clutch cable, clutch lever, & brake pads. Upon reading some posts on here & other sites about the 220 piston failures, I decided to check the piston. When I removed the cylinder, I found that the lower rear portion of the piston had a crack. Luckily, it didn't come apart and cause any case damage but it did wear down the coating on the lower part of the cylinder (as evidenced by shiny aluminum). There were no visible gouges on the cylinder from the piston failure. I don't believe the piston rings would ride down that low on the cylinder where it is worn down. Does the cylinder need to be plated regardless or can the cylinder be used as is?

You will need to have it replated to avoid excessive wear. It would be pointless to do a topend on a severely worn cylinder.
The bright side is that it should last for years.....

There is http://www.langcourt.com/ , http://www.usnicom.com/ , http://www.powersealusa.com/ and http://kustom-kraft.com/NEWNIKASIL.html
I would call all them for the best price and guarantee available. Quality can be a crapshoot depending on how the equipment is working that day and the person doing the plating.
Most fit a new piston to the cylinder for best fit.... Make sure you are getting a WISECO piston.... just say no to a Pro-X in a 220.
