I had a RAD valve in my '96 and it performed excellent. Contrary to what was posted in this thread elsewhere, the biggest improvement appeared in the mid range. Low end and top end were strengthened a bit, but the mid is where I could feel the most improvement.
I have used regular Boyeson reeds, and the V-Force Reed cage, although neither in the KDX. Both of these items worked well, but, IMO, a full cage, VF or RAD, is the way to go for best performance increases. To me, they are worth the extra $$ and I will not consider buying reeds alone for my recently purchased '04 KDX200.
The RAD costs more (solid aluminum body vs the VF plastic body).
RAD valves were reported to have short reed life, but I did not find this to be true on the KDX and ran my '96 hard for a year and a half with no problems before selling it.
Just sayin'.......
