Time for a new chain and sprockets, been running renthal r3 o ring, for the most part I am pretty happy with the renthal but thinking about a non o ring chain, I ride in a lot of mud, any opinions?

I tihnk an o-ring chain is pretty pointless on a dirtbike. Get a high quality roller chain. D.I.D. is good, and some of the nicer RK chains are good too. I went cheap and got the RK HD 520 and so far so good.

I got stock ratios with an x-ring chain from RMATV for ~$90; it's their own Primary Drive brand. Tons and tons of good reviews.

I love my Primary Drive X-ring chain.... Been very good to me with no stretching after the initial stretch....

A lot of my riding buddies have switched to o-ring chains (from a regular chain). They say that their chains need adjusting a LOT less often and that the chains are lasting a LOT longer.

On the regular (non o-ring) chains we have had the best luck and longevity with EK, on our small bikes at least.

Whatever ring type it is is not the point. The point is that any ringed chain will be harder to turn than a NON-ringed chain. Or..a non-ringed chain will be easier to turn than any ringed chain.

The friction inherent in those rings does make a difference. Friction isn't free. Well, compensating for it isn't.

If you are of the opinion that the more free movement of the final drive is important, run a non-ringed chain. If longevity is more important (and subsequently, free movement LESS important), run a good ringed (O, X, T, or whatever else you wanna call it) chain.

...which will very unlikely actually be an 'O' ringed chain.

'Ya think Stewart runs a ringed chain?

I doubt it.

Are you going to put on a new chain after every ride?

I doubt it.

I keep hearing great stuff about primary drive. I think I'll give them a shot when I manage to kill this RK HD chain. I do plan on sticking to standard roller chain's though.

This comes under the 'everybody has an opinion' heading..'cuz everybody does.

Me, too!

I've used Primary drive sprockets. They were OK..but that's about it. Renthal sprockets are far superior..sez me. What anyone wouldn't like about a sprocket that does cost maybe 50% more...but lasts 2-3x as long, I don't know.

I do think the same applies to chains. A cheap chain is just that. Cheap. Some would have you believe that any chain will work well...if it's taken care of.

Baloney. That's like saying there isn't any difference between a chinese and an NSK wheel bearing.

Anyone that believes that, well, I'm sorry. You're welcome to think whatever you like.

I'm not saying Renthal chains are better than others..or as good. I have no idea.

What I AM cautioning against is buying a chain that is 'less' expensive based solely on its price. That likely isn't a good idea.

I agree with the sprocket statement... but I have real life experience with both. Primary Drive chains are good.

Also... check the specs on them compared to other makers.

Back to chains, anyone try these?

A guaranteed forever sprocket sounds good..........(note..does not apply to 'custom' gear sets, so maybe use of a 12T would negate their guarantee).
