new sprocket clearance?

Post by kdxguy »

on my 01 KDX220 i changed the front and rear sprockets to a 12/47 and i don't remember having this little of clearance. i had to set the rear wheel adjuster half way as the sprocket teeth was hitting and theres a nut from the chain guider that is almost rubbing the side of the rear sprocket. did i do something wrong or is this normal?

the stock gearing is 13/47. So the rear sprocket should not be hitting anything. Maybe someone put the wrong guide on or used the wrong bolts? I think the 220 has a bit different guide because it has an O-ring chain.

the sprocket teeth were hitting the part of the chain guide and would lock up the rear wheel. i had to set the adjusters almost half way to clear

Something is not right. How about a pic of the rear wheel mounting?

circled in yellow is the nut that is almost rubbing on the sprocket. the teeth were catching on the chain guide just to the left of the circle, there is very little room in there.

i pulled the wheel off and checked everything over again. The more i look at the chain guide im thinking it is after market or homemade. i think i can turn a bolt around and do some grinding with a dremal to make it work.

here is some good pictures of it.

I had the same problem last summer. I had to use a dremel tool to remove some of the plastic on the chain guide. Once I did that, it was good as new. I think my problem was I used a x-ring chain and it was a little bit bigger than stock. I hope that helps

Assuming some things...like you didn't change FROM a 10T CSS..like CM said, you should be farther AWAY in the back, not closer.

Did you replace any fasteners on the guide? Did you take the guide OFF?

Look at your sprockets again..and/or count the teeth.

You sure you didn't put on a 49?

Maybe you bought a 47 and what you got was a 49?

Two pics below: 12-47 sprockets, 108 link chain, OEM guide.

You can see how far a 47 sits inside the guide.

Note that you can see the offending fastener through the reliefs cut into your sprocket?

Not on this 47. Granted, your pic angle is different.

If it doesn't hit or rub...why bother? The two items (sprocket/guide) aren't going to be moving back and forth.

...you hope.

Howcome my forward two bolts go through the top block..yours don't.

...'cuz your guide ain't at all the same as MY OEM-straight from Kaw guide (US model).

Are the chain guides between a 220 and a 200 different? The 220 came with an o-ring chain..the 200 did not.

Suffice to say...the guides are not the same.

Thanks for the pictures

I did not remove the chain guide or anything. all i did was swap sprockets out. the Rear sprocket is identical to my original and says 47 on it. i used a hack saw and cut a bit off the end of the top block and that solved the sprocket from hitting it, and also fliped around the top bolt at the back of the chain guide and that gave a ton more of clearnce between it and the side of the sprocket(bolt head smaller then the nut)

since i have owned the bike i think i only had to adjust the chain once or twice in the 2 years, it never seemed to stretch. so this is the first time trying to move the wheel the opposite way
