How do you hold the main shaft when removing the 10mm nut on the gear on the left side of the engine? I subscribed to cyclepedia but it seems they skipped that step.

Ooops...wrong shaft.

I don't recall there being a procedure listed for that.

If you force the LH gear against the subvalve rod, you will likely break a tooth off. That's happened before.

Hold the other end with either something soft-jawed..or use a hunk of leather for a pad?

Access the main rod through the access cover..hold it there?

Is the cylinder off?

Even the service manual doesn't say anything about how to hold onto the shaft. It just says "remove nut".

Yes cylinder is off. I looking at very lightly applying vise grips and a piece of rag to hold the gear. Will let you know how it goes.

Worked out ok with the vice grips and a rag wrapped around the gear.I am ready to fire it up again now, but I must read through this site to find the best break in procedure. Thanks CC. ...Oh by the way, the stock piston had several small cracks in the skirt..... guess I got lucky.

This is the second cracked skirt 220 in a few days...or maybe I just read your piston story twice.......

Anyway..another internet fairy tale debunked! Some do have the opinion that the only thing wrong with the 220 piston is that a bunch of internet boobs write bad things about it.

Be careful with it..and it will run like a three-legged dog until you do another top end. Warm it up..ride it like you stole it..and it will run better than any other 'gently' broke in 220!
