I thing i have a clutch problem :S

Post by kevfort19 »

hello, I wonder if this is normal when my bike is stop(engine not running) and put the first gear, I press the clutch and try to move the bike. The rear wheel is blocked as if I did not touch the clutch. Normaly on a car if you touch the clutch you can move the car, but on my bike if i'm in first or second ... the bike don't move even if i touch the clutch.

I want to precise that when i run with the bike , the gear are changing properly and all gos well

That's a pretty common problem and is usually caused by the clutch basket fingers getting grooves worn in them. You can disassemble it and file them smooth again. supposedly switching to a Hinson clutch will improve things because the surface is harder. I never tried one though.

It happens with a brandy-new basket, too. Hinson, even (I have one). The notchy basket will give you trouble shifting when the engine is running.

Which is to say...it's normal for the KDX. Bikes that activate the clutch from the INside don't usually have that problem. The KDX activates from the OUTside.

That's why the KDX is harder to start in-gear than some other bikes, too.

If you have to move it in-dear, engine off, clutch pulled....rock it back and forth a time or two 'til you feel the plates break loose. It will still be hard to push around but the back tire won't be skidding along anyway.

...unless you're on something slippery..much...gravel over hardpan..something like that.

There are clutch anomalies that can make the stickage worse than it otherwise might be...but it's always going to be there to some extent.

A stalled bike, in gear, driven by the rear wheel...don't shift fer diddle. Put your not running bike in gear, pull the clutch, go downhill, just try to shift into neutral.

Point is..shifting into neutral is not always an option.

Point #2 is, the answer to keyfort's question is...'It's normal.'

For a KDX anyway.

Hmm, aisle halve to try that. My bike shifts into newtral with the engine running when I least want it to. I never thought of shutting the engine off before each shift to ensure a neutral-free selection. Thanks for the tip!

Which is why I bought one before they went away.

No one said you could get 'em anymore..just that they work better.

Better than what was in the bike to start with..meaning the OEM basket.
