dented expansion chamber repairs?

Post by sparkingdogg »

just bought ANOTHER kdx today, super-clean '00 200, has an aftermarket pipe with a medium dent. anybody ever fix these? i think i saw something on ebay for repairing this.

thought maybe a welding shop could do it, otherwise.

advice?? i know 500 others reading this have dented expansion chambers too.

seems... the oem is double wall and the am is single... right??

oh, i think 16 of my other 22 2 strokes have dented pipes too. gotta stop drinking all that cough medicine before i ride... :?

There are several companies out there that fix those dents.

You could try doing it yourself, too.

I never have, but understand the concept: plug both ends tightly, heat the dented area with a torch, the rising pressure should push the dent out.

There are other methods, too.

I didn't have any luck with the heating method - I had trouble getting a good enough seal to keep the pressure in, and really don't think the torch I was using produced enough heat. Plan B was to fill it up with water and let it freeze overnight (it was cold here a few weeks ago). That worked fine, and no risk of something exploding in your face, but not much in terms of control - I may have been lucky, I don't know if anyone else has had issues with this method splitting the joints on the pipe. The end result isn't pretty, but took the dent out - will try to dig up the pictures I took.

My buddy sent his off and was happy with the results.

Pictures below are before and after for my pipe - sorry about the quality, just snapped them with the phone.
