silencer tear down

Post by scheckaet »

I was told a long time ago you couldn't (shouldn't?) take appart the end of the spark arrestor (whatever it's called) the part that has the pop rivet.
Mine seems full of spooge (and seems much heavier than it should) and am also curious and want to see what's in there.
Anybody removed those rivet before? Is it possible to put new ones back after you inspected and cleaned the parts?
Don't want to take it appart if I'm gonna be cussing for hours trying to put it back together...
Any advice? Thx

Sure can, just drill those puppies out. It'll also have a sealant of high temp silly cone that'll make separating the end cone from the canister a little difficult. You can either use rivets again or replace the rivets with screws, 've done both and the screws work OK. Make sure you use high temp silly cone when reassembling.

I took my TCII apart..and destroyed it in the process. Getting the end cap off was a piece of cake. The arrestor itself? It was stuck in there real good..and nothing short of beating the pi$$ out of it (I'd given up getting it out in one piece by the time I started pounding on it) would budge it. That..and there isn't much to get to leverage-wise, and parts you can get to are somewhat delicate (like the 'blades' on the turbine parts of the arrestor).

I've sprayed a whole can of YCCC in it..trying to clean it up. Oddly..as much as was sprayed in, very little ever came out. Don't know where it gets 'stuck'. I soaked it in a can of Berryman's. too.

Neither of those ended up making it any 'lighter'!

What is it you're taking apart? An FmF TCII or a PC?

Good luck. I wanna hear all about your success.

There's sure nothing delicate on the older version

I tear my older TC down every repack and heat all parts til they glow with a mapp gas torch

They end up nice and clean

What you have the the basic screen set-up. That's not what the TCII has..hence the 'turbine' part of the name. Considered to have considerably less back pressure than a screen.

What are you taking apart, sheckaet?

thanks for all the replies guys.
I don't have pics, but mine looks like Wibbs muffler, the only difference is the end cap.
Anyway, taking it out wasn't too hard, and holly molly that thing was filled with tar/spooge and old packing around the screen :? . Took me a good 2 hours to clean it with screwdrivers, torch, wire wheel. I use some high temp silicone to seal it a bit at re-assembly so that the gas goes through the pipe and not leak all around it (if you see what I mean)
I probably removed a pound of crap (well mayb not that much, but there was a LOT) and I sure will clean it more often now that I know it's not that hard.
I think I'm gonna be WAY faster now
Thanks again

I didn't miss anything.

If you choose to think that makes them the same for some reason...you're welcome to it.

Have another few beers, Wibbens.

A 'Turbine Core' is not a 'Turbine Core II'.

'Not' means they are not only not the same, but that they are different, too. Imagine that!

Re: 'I don't have pics, but mine looks like Wibbs muffler..' he said, after I asked him what he was working on.

I'm sure it does....which is why it fits on his '05 KDX.

Re: 'just stating actual facts about my Turbine Core S/A'

Understood. I also understand those facts have nothing to do with the subject at hand.

...brother....talk about intuitively obvious to even a casual observer........

But, hey! I'm sure I'm wrong. I usually am. Actually, the actual facts by some folks' reckoning has me wrong all the time about everything. OK. Lucky for me...'cuz I don't care.

..take my hand...follow me.....watch your step....be careful.....

1. Yours does not look like Wibby's at all.
2. Yours is a POWERCORE2, not a TC (TurbineCore)2.
3. A PowerCore2 is NOT a spark arrestor:

http://www.motoworldracing.com/FMF-Powe ... ncers.html

So...the whole discussion is moot at best, as it has nothing to do with spark arrestors.

But...what do I know...........

Except for the fact that it helped the OP! :dumazz

All he wanted to do was take it apart and clean it

Matters diddle if it's a TC or PC or a P.O.S. TCII

Listen ya stoopid old feckin coot

When did I ever say they were the same??

doG, yer like talkin to an old blue haired woman sometimes!

You are the one saying mine's some basic screen thing (except I left out the "the the")

You have no clue what you are saying I guess

No wonder every time we ride and we come along a trail and you are like "hey looky, a new trail! we never seen that before!"

And I'm thinking to myself "Fecking moron!, we rode it just last week!!"

I gonna start calling you Hoot Jr.

This thread became a waste of breath days ago. It certainly hasn't improved since. I am abashed at having wasted my time.
