Got my son a KX/KDX80. Neat little woods bike.

Post by firffighter »

Well I've been looking for a nice little woods bike for my 12 yr. old for the past 8 months or so. He has been on a XR100 for 2 years now and was ready to move up.

I wanted to get him a 2-stroke, but was afraid he would have trouble with the hit and I also wanted a bigger bike that he could spend more than a year on.

So, I found a '93 KX80 bigwheel that has all of the off-road mods already done to it. It has a headlight/taillight (not currently hooked up), kickstand, Moose FWW, reed block spacer and aluminum bars with brushguards. I went through the entire bike and it needs nothing except some new tires. Got it all for $600 and even has cool '90's purple graphics just like the KDX's.

Kinda looks like a mini KDX and should make a great woods bike for him for a number of years.

I actually saw the bike on craigslist last fall, but it just said KX80, and we wanted a bigwheel version of KX100.

Well, it came up again and I noticed this time that it had the kickstand, FMF pipe/silencer and headlights, so I called and asked what size tires it had on it and low and behold it was a bigwheel. Previous owner had no idea that all of the off-road mods were not stock.

We are headed out on Sunday to test her out.

Awesome! I'd love to find something like that to have for when Ana's ready to step up from the TTR50.

Sweet!

The young-buck can always carry a couple quart sized nalgene (lexan) bottles if'n fuel becomes an issue. :supz:

Well, we did a good ride on Sunday. We did 43 miles of desert terrain in Central Oregon.

My son did great on the bike and said he never wanted to ride a 4-stroke again. :supz:

I topped him of once and had to put in about a 1/3 of a tank. I think he could put on about 50 miles with reserve.
