Shock Bushing

Post by N8Strine »

Rear Shock. What is the easiest way to press out the rear shock bushing. I can not get a socket around it because there is not a enough room between the bushing and shock body. I almost need a half of a socket.[/b]

Do you mean the Heim joint at the top of the shock?
If so, I used a socket. It only pushes one way and there is a clip that has to come out first. That clip was tough to get out.

The upper shock bushing, a bolt goes through it to bolt the shock to the frame.

Let's talk apples and apples.

Karl said Heim joint. Some models have that, and I suppose that's why he mentioned it.

Th 'H' or 'A' model KDX?

It is NOT a heim joint. It's a rubber bushing:

92092-1062 BUSHING-RUBBER,SHOCKABSORBER

I don't KNOW, but I would guess it is NOT simply pressed into place. Seems there is an adhesive used there, isn't there?

It's bad? That doesn't happen too often.......... :hmm:

Original, I think I know how I can get it out of there. Pivot works shock kit comes with a new one.

Is the PW replacement a rubber bushing? Most PW replacement stuff I've seen is NOT 'like' OEM.

You could torch it out.

I'm sure your shock fluid/parts would love that............

The only part that is rubber is the center part. It is exactly like OEM the rubber is in the center between the aluminum part.

I take back what I said. The joint I was talking about is on the shock off my '99 CR. Sorry, N8STrine, I don't recall the top of the KDX shock, exactly. Never had tried to get one out.

I said, '..some models..'

That wasn't said to infer a reference to some KDX models.

Yamaha uses heim joints top and bottom of the shock...on 'some models'.

So...what's your plan? We wanna hear all about it! :pop:

(...and how well it works out!)

Well got her in tonight!!!!!!!!!! I used a press at work to get it out and tried to use a press to get the new on in and ended up ruining the bushing. The press is too hard to use to put it back in so I came up with my own rig that worked better. So here it is.

Bushing pressed out. Ready for the new one.

Here is the Rig I made. It is a piece of all thread and a modified pipe. This is the same method I used on my swingarm bearings except I used a socket on the one side and a smaller socket as the driver to draw the bearings in. I recommend this ways as it draws the bearings in evenly and you can feel what you are doing alot easier than you would on a press.

Here is a close up. You have to notch the pipe out because there is not enough room in between the shock body and bushing.
