Best skidplate?

Anyone make one for the KDX that has "wraparound wings"

If all anyone makes is glide plates that cover the centre of the frame, then I will make one myself.

But I am feeling lazy, so I thought I would ask.

Thanks,
Phil

Hyde Developments make a hard plastic one that has waterpump protection. I have yet to try it out though. they are made in South Africa from memory and I don't know if they are available over there. They should be if I can get one over here. There should be photos in my gallery. If not I will put some there.

I looked for one with wings and could not find one via a search of internet catalogs. The frame rail hoops do help in this area but I was hoping for wing protection also for the water pump. Let us know if you do find one.

Beware there are a few sites that show a winged skid plate for a KDX but when you check on it, the winged skid plate picture is a generic picture. e.g. Utah Sport Cycle ad (USC web site is represented correctly, but some of the on line catalogs show a winged version. Utah Sport Cycle does not make a winged version for the KDX)

I believe this adds to the total width of the bike and would not be desirable. I think DEVOL makes a water pump guard if that's what your after.....

I got one off eBay some time ago from a fellow out of Canada who made them out of thick aluminum plating. I'll see what I can find in my files about it. It covers the whole bottom and has wings extending a little more than the loops. It doesn't wrap around and up by the water pump though. Doug's KX has one like that.
I don't care for the Devol, it mounts using the bolts for the water pump anyway and I think that is a weak link.

1995 and up (not sure about the older ones) KDX's have those two little U shaped "wings" welded on each side of the frame that would make the skid plate extremely wide (as Vince pointed out) if it were to "wrap" up to protect the water pump. The MX bikes do not have these. Most damage I've seen to the case and water pump of offroad bikes has come from underneath and slightly to the side. The KDX's little "wings" do a good job protecting from that. One of my riding buddies has broken the wings off twice and has yet to have any damage to the case or water pump. He is running an MX style glide plate. I have a UtahSport Cycle plate and it has worked well. But, it does not wrap up around the sides. It just covers the "wings".

Just for the record, The 1989 - 1994 models have those two bars coming out. The 1986 - 1988 C models do, too. They must work because I have never had any trouble at all with water pump damage on my 1987.

Yeah, I agree. I got my Devol WP guard for a steal off e-bay, and I think the design actually increases chances of downing your bike on the trail...Increases leverage at the failure point.

On top of that one of the bolts from Devol snapped w/ next to no torque leaving me w/ an easy-out job. I installed grade 8(metric eq) studs, w/ nuts to avoid the problem again, but it's still an inherently bad design...

Where did you get it, and how much was it? I've already tweaked the crap out of my aluminium plate. I'm real hard on skid plates and would like to try a plastic or carbon one. The Hyde looks pretty good.

Me too! Maybe it would absorb some of the sound instead of amplify it...
