Measuring Fork Oil

Post by KDX Butterfly »

Is there a "simple standard" for measuring fork oil. Yes, I admit, I have procrastinated on putting the oil in just for the simple fact that I am not real sure of how to measure the oil. Just keep in mind that I DID clean, change the fork seals, and replace the forks with next to no help. I'm learning.

Thanks everyone!

wow, tough room. Sounds like somebody could use the hot bubble bath-fumey candles-dove bar- and girly music treatment.

anyway..

I just use a horse syringe hooked to a piece of aquarium tube hooked to a piece of brass fuel line. I drilled a snug fitting hole in a hunk of wood to slide the fuel line through, so I can adjust the oil level.

There is cool little tool like what is described above, measure the length of brass tubing to determine how far down it is before it can't reach any more fluid.

No bubbly bath, maybe A fumey candle, no dove bar, and if you consider Pantera girly music, well then ok.

Thanks for the suggestions Colorado Mike and SVandal. Anyone else? Maybe I can create (ha) my own "blonde-girly" concoction.

As has been said..a large animal syringe from your local Fleet store, some tubing, you're done.

Don't fret over the tubing being exactly straight...or not. So..you measure from where the syringe will rest on the fork tube to the end of the tubing, cut it at the 110mm length. Ahhh...but the tubing is bent a little bit, so is it going to be 108mm??

You won't know the difference most likely.

I've measured the oil level after using a bit of curled tubing..when I considered it might matter. The level was a bit high..so cut some a couple mm longer than the desired end result!

If the cut isn't parallel to the oil surface you're going to get an 'erroneous' reading anyway.

Short answer: Doan worry 'bout it. If you can tell the difference between 110mm and 108mm in your fork oil level when you ride the bike...you probably should be riding an $8000 punkin and pay some exspurt to work on it for 'ya.

....what's that bath-fumey-kind'a candle smell??

This all stems from my mis-assumption about the required maintenance level of wimmens in general. I should have known one that had the presence of mind to be from the Durango, CO. area would be much above average in her ability to take enjoyment from the joys in life that matter most.

Regrettably, my only defense is that I was raised wrong, by wolves, and with little female influence.

Hmmmm, I used a syringe but without the tubing

I put a hose clamp on the syringe, to act as a stop, at my chosen depth
