Jetting question....

Post by Rick »

I'll try to keep this simple. My bike (91 250) runs like a bat out of hell, but will hardly idle. I have gone through the normal process...pilot, air screw, main, float, etc. Right now, i'm running a 152 main, and a 35 pilot. New plug, packing, clean filter, and so on. The only way this thing will idle, is with the idle screw all the way in. There is no adjustment left. The air screw is out 1 and a half. Out any more, has no effect, and in, obviously kills it. I've tried every clip position on the needle, to no avail, except different throttle responses, as to be expected. Compression is at 165-170. I bent the tang on the float valve, to lower the float in the bowl, and that helped a bit. i'm not sure what the needle is. Any ideas where to go? Oh, mix at 40.1 with 93oct. and ams. interceptor, and she smokes!

I was told, right before i bought it. That was 2 years ago. I dont get to ride alot, so im figuring its due. I wanted to do it this winter, but, you know how that goes........Thats kinda why i did the compression check. 165-170 falls right in the middle of the compression window. Honestly, it has never really idled good since i bought it.....

That might be the problem. I rode with a guy on a clapped out KDX250 like yours that wouldn't idle worth a sh1t. He rode it regularly for 3 years without at least checking the top end out.....

Compression will tell you a lot of things, but might not tell you how badly your top end needs a rebuild.

Ever heard of the clap? Yer' ride's got STD . . . so THAT'S the problem!!

Seriously, you've made some improvement meaning you're moving in the right direction. Go PM that guy on Thumpertalk (chokey is his name) - he seems to know the most about the 250 in terms of jetting. The big fix for him was having the slide cut a size leaner - Ron Black can do that. Or see if you can order a size leaner from sudco or something.
