Gearbox Oil Poll

I found the discussion on gearbox oil in the "horrible squealing screching noise" thread rather interesting. Especially the article in the link CC put in there. What's everyone out there using and what are your experiences?

I've been using Rotella T in my KX.

I used ATF and whatever 10-30 I had on hand in my KDX200.

Maybe I'll switch to something else...

So...where's the poll part? :hmm:

Vote HERE! ...until Inda puts 'em together maybe?

FWIW I use Yamalube 10/30-40. I used to use 'motor oil'. Valvoline. For motorcycles even. It met spec. My clutch squealed like a stuck pig. I haven't heard a peep out of it since the switch...and I 'use' it quite a bit more now than I did then.

Similar situation in my Honda (700SC). When the tune of the bike hit (around 9KRPM or so), the clutch would slip. New friction plates, new steels, new springs...same. With Yamalube (and another set of new everything)..no slip no more.

Note the input on oil on the link mentioned came from a Maxima geru. Another FWIW I s'pose, but it was based on a tad more than what some rider thought about it.

I don't see my choice and there's no "other" for a choice either. I run Rotella in a straight 30 wt oil. Rotella is made by Shell I think and is for diesel motors. Diesel engine oil is formulated to hold particles in suspension more than standard oils do. Anyone who owns a diesel knows that within 100 miles, the oil looks like it's been run 100,000 miles it turns soooo BLACK!!! It really has to hold a lot of crap so I figure it works well in our bikes that don't have motor oil filters. I don't want gunk settling out into the bottom or any where else for that matter.

I voted on the motorcycle specific line, but I use motorcycle specific Golden Spectro 10-40. No squeals no slips.

I hadn't heard of ATF being used until recently. How does it perform for you? Good shift quality?

Awesome. I never used to be able to kick my bike over in gear with one kick, it took two, but now with the ATF it's first kick. Really helps on dead engine starts. $3.30 a quart and I change it every 5 hours.

GM Sythetic Gearbox Lube. I had a couple of quarts of it in the garage left over from a trans repair. Shifts nice, clutch works good, isn't burned up when I drain it....so I'll probably stick with it.

I use a 2-part ATF & 1 part 30W Quality Motor Oil mixture. Change it every three rides. Trans shifts smooth as butter...

Yep, that's where I got it from, except quoting him it was "2 parts ATF..... 1 Part 10W/30 or 10W/40 GTX." And, yes, the GTX was in bold lime . . . for whatever reason!

Hatched righ'cheer on this website!

Same here. I ran it in my YZ450F and it seemed to do well (changing every 5 hours anyway), so I just ran it in the bottom end of my 125.
