Gearing change after RB mods? Anyone done this?

Post by firffighter »

I have been running 13/50 with my 220 because most of the terrain I ride it very tight steep stuff.

But, after the RB mods, I noticed I can run a gear higher with ease and lug the thing like my old XR400.

So, I was thinking of going back to a 47 on the rear. Hoping to open things up a bit and get a little more speed on top for desert type events.

I dont want to lose any grunt though, it is too much fun to wheelie in 3rd gear when rolling on the throttle :supz:

Give it a shot, nothing harmed in trying . . .

I ended up moving from a 12/47 to a 12/45 to accomplish the same effect you're shooting for with success (got a really good deal on the 45-t rear) though the gearing I have is a tad shorter than OEM.

I ran 13/49 briefly after RB mods. I like 13/47 better, it pulls just fine. In fact, on some trails I wish I could carry 3rd a bit further, it gets on the pipe and gets a bit lively. Might try the DEK needle

I ride about the same type of terrain.

I ran 12/47 before RB mods. After RB mods I switched back to 13/47. Still noticing more grunt and obviously more top speed. Try it!

I run a 12/47 all the time around here as the terrain doesn't support running anything else. When we goto the desert I switch out the 12t for a 13t and voila i'm ready to run the higher speeds. Cheap and easy.

I went back to stock gearing 13/47 and switched to the DEK needle. Big difference. Now I can just leave it in 3rd all day! Almost like cheating. After I add a MT43 trials tire, it should be unbelievable!

ebeck had to do the same thing in the new hybrid, i think he went 2-3 teeth smaller in the rear and it works great for him
