when or what are the tell tale signs this needs to be done? I have a 2006 KDX 200 with about a dozen outings on it. It runs strong but perhaps just a tad off from when I got it. Do you do a compression test? On it's first top end is it usually just rings? I know there's no one easy answer as there are many variables...just trying to get a consensus on when ya'll decided to do your first top end and what led to that decision. thanks!

Depends on the rider. The weekend warrior might go 4 years, and the avid woods racer might go just one season. Where are you at?

I run that bike pretty hard in wide open areas...not much tight techno chuggin' along

That's really nothing as long as your jetting is somewhat close to correct

ok, thanks...I treat it like a cheap prom date...rode hard and put away wet....most of my riding is of the motocross nature, but I'm sure after hearing from folks that I can get thru 2009 season at least before putting new rings in it

If you run it hard and often you might consider replacing the rings every season . . . gives you a chance to check tolerances and keep the KIPs in good shape.

I last did my top end in 2003

It still pulls all 275lbs of me (without gear) up anything little Carvr can go up!

That is true! I've seen him without gear. And Carvr is little.

I might be mistaken, but doesn't midlife want to get the grenade out of there?

I used to check for compresion and after 12 years waiting for a change I open up the top end. Everything was within specifications but I put a new Wiseco anyway. I gained a little bottom end probably because the Wiseco is lighter.

I honestly think most trail bike riders change out their pistons/rings way too often, more than necessary. These motors are either designed for the MX world, which we are never going to abuse a motor like, or they are way over built for the riding style, which the KDX motor is for sure. I think it's much more likely to wear the cylinder lining away before the piston is shot.

I pull my pipe and look up in the exhaust port to examine the side of the piston and the back of the cylinder. If they show any wear, I tear down the top end. If they look good, then probably the whole piston and bore are going to look good. Just what I do........
