tope end replacement
when or what are the tell tale signs this needs to be done? I have a 2006 KDX 200 with about a dozen outings on it. It runs strong but perhaps just a tad off from when I got it. Do you do a compression test? On it's first top end is it usually just rings? I know there's no one easy answer as there are many variables...just trying to get a consensus on when ya'll decided to do your first top end and what led to that decision. thanks!
I spent most of my money on women and beer, the rest I just wasted

ok, thanks...I treat it like a cheap prom date...rode hard and put away wet....most of my riding is of the motocross nature, but I'm sure after hearing from folks that I can get thru 2009 season at least before putting new rings in it

I honestly think most trail bike riders change out their pistons/rings way too often, more than necessary. These motors are either designed for the MX world, which we are never going to abuse a motor like, or they are way over built for the riding style, which the KDX motor is for sure. I think it's much more likely to wear the cylinder lining away before the piston is shot.
I pull my pipe and look up in the exhaust port to examine the side of the piston and the back of the cylinder. If they show any wear, I tear down the top end. If they look good, then probably the whole piston and bore are going to look good. Just what I do........
