FMF Pipe Applications?
I'll try to make this as simple as possible, but it won't be easy:
2001 KDX 220, carb and head on the way to RB, frisbee removed, Boyesen Pros.
I am looking to beef up the top end powerband, trying not to sacrifice bottom end chug.
Fredette swears by the REV, but FMF swears they only make it for 125s. As if dealing with their surly "product specialist" chics wasn't bad enough, they don't have an aplication chart for the REV.
They also state that the Gnarly is the "REV replacement" for my bike. I have an order in for a Gnarly Desert, which was my best guess.
Then, I found a local deal on a "fatty." It supposedly came off an '04 KDX 200, and is a "rebuild." Three problems here: first, FMF only claims making that pipe for 86-94 200s, with no applications for 220s. Second, what the hell is a rebuild pipe? Third, will this flippin' thing fit my 220?
(remember to breathe. . . )
Any input is appreciated, even if it's to make fun of me.

It's called "Desert" not Rev... the stoned chick proly has no idea anyway....
They did make a Fatty for a year or so that will fit an H model KDX... no doubt named after their favorite hobby.

The Desert is one of the two models of Gnarly (woods aimed at chug, desert aimed at scream). The rev is a different pipe altogether and, if I'm not mistaken, is the one that JF says to use. Here's what FMF says:
"The FMF Rev pipe focuses its power delivery in the middle and upper rpms of the powerband. If you’re running out of power up top, want more time between shifts and do a lot of deep berm or sand riding, the FMF Rev is your pipe of choice. "
sounds about right for the stock 220 characteristics. So how does it differ from the Desert or Fatty? I just want the most bang for my buck. No sense in buying twice.
You're both right; I should let the freaks in Cali keep their Fatties.

H series is all 1995-2006 KDX 200s/220s. 1995 was the new design, the H series is the sucessor to the E series '89-94 bikes.
BTW, I recommend Pro Circuit pipes. I've had both and much prefer the PC pipes, for both strength, and knowing what the hell is going on as far as designations go. Platinum for top end boost, Platinum 2 for low end. Not Fatty, Burly, Gnarly and Beastly or whatever.

yeah, I've been surprised at how poor the customer service is at FMF both times I've called. I always feel awkward, like I'm keeping the teenie-bopper on the phone from playing with her gum and twirling her hair or something.
Do you like the PC enough to pay return shipping on the FMF that's on the way? Like I said, I only want to buy once.

Fortunately for FMF employes 4/20 is on Sunday this year. Of course, it seems every day is 4/20 on the job for them. Man, where did I go wrong in life? I could handle peddling their crap under a tent at the MX nationals with all the hot FMF chics!

Personally... I like the FMF pipes better than the PC... just personal preference... would I call them for support? Hell NO!

bruh, this is exceedingly frustrating.
FMF, already described.
PC, doesn't show a fit for a 220.
RockymountainATV; only the gnarly
Dennis Kirk: too much a pain in the A** to navigate
Bike Bandit: silencers only.
MX south: KDX 200 and 250, no 220.
AARRGG!!

Lemme get this out of the way... anything that fits a 200...will fit a 220 with the same results... not counting the cylinder size, piston size and porting.

That's the type of information I can understand. . . phew!
That being said, Canadian Dave claims
"Its important to note that because of differences in port timing the KDX200 and 220 don't react the same to each pipe. Both the FMF pipes and the Pro Circuit pipe were originally designed to be used on the KDX200. Installing a Torque pipe on a KDX200 will improve performance over the stock pipe from idle to wide open throttle. However installing a torque pipe on a KDX220 will improve performance from idle to about 7500 rpm then fall flat just like the stock pipe with no meaningful increase in over rev or higher rpm performance. If you're looking to improve your 220's power delivery from the bottom to top end then a rev pipe is a must. You'll often see the FMF KG-30 advertised as a rev pipe for the 200 and as a torque pipe for the 220 for this very reason."

hence my confusion

I just don't see it. This PC Platinum 2 is very strong, I've rammed the bike on a log so that the bike was teetering on the log on the pipe, and it did not dent the pipe. PC pipes have 0 fitment issues, and they don't screw with you with fancy designations. Support has to be better than chatting up the FMF bimbos!Indawoods wrote:Personally... it would be one thing if they were cute and ditsy and flirtatious the way good Cali girls are, but as previously stated, they're just ignorant and surly. Kinda made me want to knock them down so that they skin their knees and tear their knickers.
On the upside, they did speak English fairly well.
The FMF Gnarly Desert (it makes me cringe just to say the name now) will be here tomorrow, so I guess I'll give it a whirl. Next go around is definitely a PC though.
Might I want a two pipe quiver anyhow, for different locales?

The FMF pipe will be great. You'll have a lot of fun becuase to be honest, the KDX is pretty mild without an aftermarket expansion chamber. You're looking at a 10-15% HP increase with just that pipe, but when re-jetted correctly, feels like much much more.
Do yourself a favor and protect your investment with some sort of pipe guard to save you from smashing it somehow. Have fun and report back with what you find!
