Helmetcam Newb...... Advice Please

Post by DirtBikeDad »

I had a $100 Amazon gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket....OK it was actually about to expire and decided to get an entry level HC to test the waters.

I bought the Oregon Scientific ATC-2K and have played with it just long enough to have a few questions for the HC guru's. Overall for PC playback the video is pretty darn good, I haven't tried to upload anything to the net yet. I taped a lap and a half on our mini-HS course today and for ~ 4 minutes of taping, I got 147MB of raw video! I don't expect to get "Chevy Show" (showing my age here) quality video out of this unit, but it should serve the purpose of giving me a good base to work with to see if this is a toy I want to spend more on in the future.

So.........

1. Anybody with specific rec's on do's & dont's for this device?

2. Software.... what do you guys use for editing the raw video to get it down to respectable sizes? (Cheap is good, free is even better)

3. Recommendations for posting sites? (You Tube, etc.)

4. Mounting tips? (Top, side, handlebars....angle?) I mounted it to the top of my helmet today on a plane even with the visor and found out that this gives a great view of the handlebars and front fender....guess I need to look up more!

5. The sound quality is pretty lame unless a) Its a really loud noise or b) you hit something *with* the camera, like a tree then it *is* very loud. :) So for vids do I stick with my preference of ambient sound only or add tunes....and if tunes...what, how, etc.

Anything else?

Thanks for any advice, now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

for the price you can't beat it
1 nothing i can think of, pretty straight forward to use
2 I use windoz movie maker
3 youtube, google...they all compress the video and you loose a lot of quality
4 side of the helmet was the best, on the handlebar it vibrates too much. You'll have to play with the angle and position before you get it right
5 yep sounds sucks, nothing you can do about it (as far as I know) turn it off or put a piece of tape on the mic to reduce the wind noise
6 get a 2 gb card (1hour vid) 4 gb didn't work 4 me

Thanks for the tips, it is amazing how much the video quality is compromised with the compression needed to get it loaded on YouTube.
