Guys I got a cylinder worn down pretty good on a 98 220 and i think im going to go ahead and get it rechromed.
Who would you guys say does the best job on our kdx bikes ?
Don't want any big bore kit, just going back stock...

It's a crap shoot....

Send it to a builder like Gorr.... he has clout with the plating clowns and if it comes back crappy... he will go to bat and get it corrected.

A go-between like EG is a good insurance choice.

Please do send the piston you are going to use with the cylinder. A decent plater will size your cylinder TO your piston. Or...get the piston from EG..have HIM send it with. That would save you some shipping-to....

In your case...it must to be a Wiseco piston....right?

FWIW..I had crap results from USChrome through FRP. That cylinder gave me fits for over a year before I found out what the problem was. That said, EG uses USChrome as far as I've heard. Even at that, Inda's comment DOES still make sense.

Langcourt is another choice.

BTW...you don't want it chrome plated. Some cylinders are..but you don't want it. I very much doubt any replater would do that if you asked 'em to.

Thanks guys..
I've heard Eric Gorr's named mentioned before and i've heard nothing bad about his work..Guess i need to drop him a line and see what he has to say...and i was going back with a Wiseco.....

Also looking the cylinder over the KIPS was covered in carbon and crud.
I honestly don't see how the thing was running as good as it was..
Behind the plate that has the 3 screws holding it, it was pack almost solid
with carbon and oil crud....
Do those valves ever need replacing or does just a good cleaning up of them mostly work ?.....

Valves?

Meaning both the main valve and the subport drums??

They should be OK. The subport drums are not steel and can be damaged with excessive 'cleaning'. Don't go after them with a stiff wire brush or your bench grinder wire wheel.

I've replaced the bushings that the tops of the drums poke through. I thought the fit was on the sloppy side. It wasn't a stellar improvement with brandy new collars.

Price those subport drums and you will want to take real good care of them...they are spendy boogers!! Something like $55 a piece as I recall.

This just got covered in another thread...but you do know of the LHT nut on the governor rod..and that supporting that rod while wrenching on the nut is MANDATORY!!????

If you happened to NOT support that rod, you DID damage the governor rod actuator. Replace it now or enjoy possibly complete engine destruction later.

No problem canyncarvr...
I did my 05 220 top end a few months ago with a Wiseco along with the carb & head mods...service manual was the first thing i bought when i got my kdx....

Yeah i checked bikebandit and those kips parts are kinda pricey..

I emailed EG and never got a response from him .
Took the cylinder down to my local dealer and talked to the head service man about it. He has been using a place in Alabama for rechroming them and says he's never had any problem over the years he has used them.
So i let them go ahead and finish stripping the rest of it down and they shipped it...
Soooo hopefully i'll have it back in a couple weeks and give you a report on it.....

Alabama would be USChrome, most likely............

You sent the piston with it? Hope so..and it was a Wiseco like your '05?

I'd appreciate some pics when you get it back. Hopefully it won't look like this:

Did you try calling him? I called yesterday and got him on the phone.

Also from what I've seen and heard about EG, he's the way to go. My boyfriend had his cylinder ported through EG about four years ago and last summer he grenaded his cylinder skirting into his motor. He called EG and Eric told him that since he did the original porting that for next to nothing, he would report and mail him a brand new one.

EG is a class act in my book!

I sent mine into him about two weeks ago as well. When I get it back I'll post pictures too so we can compare notes.

CCarver it wasn't US, can't remember the name right now , i'll post it later tho , i've got to drop by the dealer Friday and i'll get the name of the place...
They are a Wiseco dealer and will match the piston to the bore..
Man that cylinder looks almost pitted, whats those spots in it ??

Yeah green passion will see what we end up with when we get them back and compare....

Those aren't pits, they're special magic holes to hold oil.

To go with the magic beans he sold you too... Zowz that looks BaD!! Did you keep it?

Posted: 10:20 am Apr 10 2008
by canyncarvr
Keep it? What....I should'a planted it to see if it would grow a new one?

Yes, I did. Keep it, I mean (didn't plant it).

When I hit the lottery, I'm going to send it to Langcourt to have it 'repaired' after USChrome fixed it. Maybe then I'll be able to tell if the FRP porting accomplished anything!!

:hmm: Don't know about magic beans. You tryin' to tell me I got ripped off on those, too? Were they s'posed to be in the box??

I guess you might be referring to the 'magic bean' I found in my pipe after running that cylinder for a bit.... This bean?Image

Nooo..this isn't a thread hijack. It is particularly related to the historical wonderosities of some folks' plating attempts. So there!

T: Mr. Mike isn't being just a wisenheimer. USChrome said some base metals were particularly porous..and they couldn't help that. They did say exactly that...the holes were a good thing..because they gave oil a place to hide out. The fact of the matter is...I don't know they are completely off-base about that or not. For all I know, pressure/sealing tests would prove them correct. I also know I don't believe it just 'cuz they say it's so! If the cylinder hadn't been out-of-round and given me all sorts of fits otherwise...I wouldn't care that it looks like it got hit with a couple loads of triple-ought buck!!

Up to the time I got this cylinder, I didn't realize I should've taken a punch and ballpein to every cylinder I've ever had bored, sleeved, honed..whatever.

...or a shotgun......

The things you learn As Time Goes By.....

Guys i got my cylinder back this weekend and it looks pretty darn good.
Awhole lot better than what Canyncarvr's did..

The place my dealer sent it was to Langcourt , i think in Ala...
It's not rechromed it's some kind of nickel coating..
Being a Wiseco dealer they mated up the piston to the bore when they redid it, same part number on the box as the other piston i got for my other 220.. It looks just like a new factory cylinder..

My dealer says they have used them for several years and had no trouble with there work. I tried to take some pic's but i couldn't get any that showed up real good...SORRY

I didn't need any boring or cylinder work done so the total cost plus piston, shipping from Langcourt to my dealer was 261.23 ...
Now as most of you know you have to have everthing off the cylinder, no metal at all, so all the seals, packing and dowel pins have to come out and were replaced, parts price 16.86....
I removed just about everthing off the cylinder myself, cleaned and bagged it up and let them put it back together, labor 45.00...

Sooo my bottom line cost was ..323.09., a new factory cylinder is over 500.00, bare.......
If you got a cylinder needing more work like welding price would be higher
and if you put it all back together yourself your cost would be cheaper, maybe this can kinda give someone a idea of what cost could be if you need it done..

Langcourt number is 334 887 9633....
Hopefully i can get it back together and broke in soon, i'll post how it turns out..If everthing works out this motor should end up in my03 KX 125 in the near future....

I will say that my cylinder doesn't look any better than what green passions did........
Soooo i couldn't take it no longer , put the cylinder and head back on last night and hoping to get it all buttoned up this weekend and start breakin it in.....
