There is considerably more material to the XR plate.

I use one OEM plate on the outside of the pack to enable use of the large spring and the corresponding seat. Maybe it's all in my head, but I think I get better separation with those installed.

My OEM clutch used to squeal quite easily (that's not a good thing in a clutch..unless that's with a capital 'C' and preceeded with Miss...) I haven't heard a chirp out of the XR-style plates (Vesrah brand, actually) that I remember.

I had heard somewhere that the XR plates were the same as the KDX plates.
My clutch was slipping a bit and was still on the original plates from '02, so I thought I would replace them.
The local bike shop only had 4 OEM clutch plates on hand.
I asked to see some '02 XR400 plates.

Now I've got 4 XR plates and 4 OEM KDX plates in my clutch. I put the XR plates in first.

Seems to work just fine.

I've always heard 'XR400' tied to KDX clutch plates. Now...I didn't presume that to mean every other displacement XR fit, too.....

Can't say I know about the year involved, neither. Call up FRP..order some XR clutch plates...done.

I am appalled that you have not availed yourself of said gory detail 'til now. What a waste of my time!!!

What year XR plates fit what years of the KDX? XR250-XR400?

I knew I had a set of new friction discs sitting at home for my 2000 XR400 and I was planning on changing the discs in the 2003 KDX200 before a race this weekend. I checked Barnett's site and they list the same part number and same quantity.....

Which is the problem, btw. The XR400 does not use the same number of plates as I recall. That's why getting them from Mr. Fredette makes sense. He buys 'lots' of 'em..repackages them to '8-per' for the KDX.

...I don't think I made that up. It has been a few years, though....

The XR plate is the one noted as having more friction material..which was kind'a the point of showing that one had more than the other.

You can tell it has more because you can SEE it when the plate with less is sitting right on top of it.

Or.........

The KDX plate is the wet one (no alcohol, please)..the XR plate is the dry one.

The KDX plate has the larger (wider..fewer per inch) friction tabs than the does the XR plate.

While one might wonder if the smaller inside diameter of the XR plates will negatively effect the separation of the clutch pack (less oil for the hydraulic effect when the hub is spinning)..it doesn't seem to. Your XR'd clutch will still be harder to break loose with the engine off and the clutch lever pulled than your buddies' bikes that have the clutch activated from the INside of the pack.

The KDX plate is on top..the KX plate is on the bottom.

KX ??????? I thought it was an XR?????????

I just wondered. Clearly the one has more surfaces but then again those surfaces are much smaller so I was not surer

I KNEW I put a 'KX' in there somewheres. I actually LOOKED for it!! (and failed to find it, obviously!)

The XR plate tabs LOOK smaller, but their are FIVE of them to every FOUR on the KDX plate.

That don't mean you're NOT optically deluded in any case.

Maybe even diluted!



I've not measured and figgered each one. Maybe there is LESS surface area. Doubt it.

I dunno.
