Frame paint

Post by AwfulSmokey »

Where can i get some touch up paint . I got a few areas i need to do. The same color would be ideal but close will work. I plan on thinning it good and just brushing it on with a china bristle.

Ebay sells Kawi green for 98-06. Is that far off from 89 green?

You can buy touch up paint at a lot of places.

For a good job ,you need a spray can of PJ1 . Just sand a little with 180grit before apply the paint.

1988-2002 kawi green epoxy paint is the exact match for your frame.

In the process, if you decide to remove all the parts in your bike and paint all the frame ,I can give you some advices.

I think i'm just going to touch it up. Thanks for the help with the PJ1. I seen PJ2 on ebay and noticed it wasn't right. Most of the paint is in great shape except for the foot peg area. As suggested i Simple Green'd my bike and was shocked how green it turned out. I foamed the engine while i was at it. The bike is lookin 100 times better these days than when i got it a few months ago.

sand it down and feather the edges. Prime and paint

still it will eventually wear off again, unless you can protect it

Never painted my KDX, I figure whats the point, it's just gonna get f'd up!

But I've repainted my crash bars and saddlebags on the Wee. Do it right and you can't even tell

I figure PJ1 paint and $150 worth of plastics and graphics got me $300 more than my kid's old KX85 would have gotten as is, but the big thing was it sold fast. The guy was looking for a gift for his kid, and kept saying the bike looked brand new. It had been raced 4 seasons. maintained well mechanically, but looked tired before the freshen-up.

The point is, fresh paint can make a lot of difference in how people feel about a bike, even if it's just for you.

I could give a crap how people feel about my bike

I like it, it takes me places and I never have to worry if the paint gets messed up

I know what you mean. Same thing happens when I wash my car.

PJ1 paint is a great product and hold better than any regular spray paint. Any kind of paint can resist to a boot rubbing against the framne near the foot peg!

Just keep in mind ...this pJ1 will be never better than the stock one.

if you have the frame empty it's a no brainer to powdercoat, it holds up a lot better.

If you plan to sell the bike, use the paint. That's what i've gathered researching it today.

Actually... powder coating has to be done correctly or your just throwing away your money. Most powdercoaters do not know what they are doing or don't care as long as it's covered and shiny.

I will use epoxy paint over powder coating anyday.....

well the cost is about 125-150 from what i've read.

It only makes sense if you've got the frame apart for another reason. I wouldn't take the bike apart just to get it powdercoated.

I'm the same way, especially with my Caddy. I am a high-end house painter by trade. I have used many a paint/coatings. The trick is like they said sand it really good on the edges. You can go as high as 400 grit if available. I would use some sort of rust-inhibitive/zinc-oxide primer. Then it's light coats. Better to do more thin coats than 1 heavy coat we will call a drip.
