Rim runout.... 0.5mm standard!!!

Post by johnkdx220 »

How anal should I be about wheel truing ???

While waiting for my new tires, I decided to check to rim runout without the tires installed. On my front rim, it seems that I have slightly surpassed the rim runout service limit suggested in the service manual which is 2mm (axial(side to side) and radial(up-down)).

I ride mostly in thight woods where rocks, mud and roots are very common... 1st to 4th gear stuff. To be honest, I didn't notice anything wrong with the wheel while riding.

I have reached the limit of my patience is trying to make the wheel "true". There are a few minor flat spots that will make it impossible to reach to suggested standard runout of 0.5mm (!!!). At best, I will be able to bring it back to the 2mm limit. I think that 0.5mm is ridicule... I probably exceeded that standard during the first ride with the new bike... The 0.5mm standard would seem more appropriate for racing on asphalt. Right?

Should I worry about it?
Oh... I have a KX USD front-end with original KDX rim.
PS: I opted to invest in the RB mods... no more $$$ for Excel rims...

That gets my vote!

I gave up on any idea of truing my rims, too. There are enough DENTS in the things to make any 'runout' measurement useless. Such a measure doesn't reflect anything of the 'trueness' of the rim when there are dents you can easily SEE.

I will start thinking about fixing it when I can SEE the wheel running wonky..or the bike tends towards uncontrollability (is that a word?) at road speed.

.5mm. Yeah...isn't THAT a hoot! Not gonna happen!!!

"Consider the sourceS"

well.... I am therefore definitively done with attempting to true this wheel.

(unless skipro3 jumps in this conversation and advises otherwise... )

Thanks guys.

That would simply be yet another reason to not worry about it. :hmm:

Even when installing brand new rims and spokes I think 1/8 inch of total runout is "trued" for a dirt bike. The ground down weld area is the one area I always seem to fight.

I was going to pontificate on the issue. Now you can just deal with never knowing what the great and all knowing ski thinks.

O.k, I'll tell you anyway. When I wash my bike, I put it on a center stand. I spin the wheels using my power washer. If the bike doesn't wobble so much from the out-of-round wheel that it falls off the stand, I call it GOOD!!!

Now, why don't you all just go kiss my ass!!! :butthead:
