air box

Post by scheckaet »

What are those "ridges" inside the air box? Do they have a purpose like making a ventury of some kind or did kawi decided to put them in just to make cleaning more difficult? :?
If they have no real function, I'm thinking about grinding them down

Thats a bummer

Glad my "E" is not like that

I just cleaned mine the other day, what a freaking mess it was!
I run mine with my modified lid still attached, I just can't imagine where all that gunk comes from :?

To clean it, I took a rag soaked in fuel and wiped it all out, worked really good

Maybe the ridges cut down on how much filter surface is resting against the airbox. On my KDX the filter is touching the back of the box where the ridges are.

A venturi is an entirely different kind of thing. For example, the fuel that's metered from the jets in your carb are sucked into the carb by air rushing over top and creating a pressure difference between the top of the jet and where the bowl. Or another example, the wind blowing over the top of a chimney tends to pull gas/smoke up and out of the chimney.

My guess is that they are for adding stiffness or strength to the airbox while still keeping the wall thickness not too thick.

Me too; I think they are for stiffness or strength. Probably could grind them down without too much problem.

not really causing a problem, it's just a real PITA to clean, and when I remove or put a filter, the ridges keep dirt on them no matter how well I try to clean it (almost never since it's such a pain) and I'm always freak out about having some falling where it doesn't belong :?

I removed most of em ridges with a blow torch (oh yeah! :supz: ) and a putty knife, worked ok. Now I didn't want to spend the next 2 hours trying to clean the air box, so it's in the dishwasher
Sometimes it's good to be single
I'll post some pics later

"I removed most of em ridges with a blow torch".....

Now, sheckaet, how you gonna feel if someone or other pipes up with a theory about how those little ridgies are the secret to all the low end torque of the KDX?

Even if they're NOT the 'secret', airboxes are always dirty....just clean out the big CHUNKIES and away you go!

Jus kiddin!

I can't believe how dry his is

Mine was just an oily goopy mess

Dishwasher?

I'm single, but I would not want my airbox in my dishwasher. Who knows what kind of filth would end up in my airbox after being in there!

The state of Jefferson found these in the woods... they were trying to locate the owner which later turns out was Mr. Wibbens.
