woods weapon for under 3k? dont know, but here's my list for you (purposely getting back on topic)

2k for the bike
40 for xr springs
160 for a wiseco piston kit (if it's on the stock piston)
40 for reeds
250 for pipe
250 for rb mods (carb and head)
100 in good tires
and the rest in bike protection... done.

I have those mods except for the RB ones and my bike goes almost everywhere. today i needed a few more hp to make up for my faults in riding technique and didn't have it. That's where RB comes in. :)

Found '03 KDX220 with new FMF Gnarly pipe and silencer already on bike, Renthal bars and aluminum barkbusters, frame guards, really good shape and could pick it up for around $2300. $250 for RB carb and head mod. $40 for XR springs and I still would have around $400 or accessories like gripper seat, skid plate, wide pegs, etc.

Tempting!

dont forget if it's on the stock piston you need to flip that out.

O.K., I found a '03 KTM 300MXC for $3200. Very clean and has all the protection on it. Talk me into the KDX220 at $2300 as a better deal.

Why would a KTM 300 with considerably more low end torque require more shifting than a KDX 220?

I was going off of the gearing which is a close ratio gearing as opposed to the wide range of the KDX.

It's a different animal.... why not just go over to KTMTalk and ask them....

keep looking I just got a 2005 KX 250 with a woods or GNCC valved suspension, new topend, tires and graphics jetted and geared perfect for woods riding for $2000 from a dealer off Ebay. I will put 5-8 hundred in it and be done for 2 years.

newer is better.

Yeah, I have read that the MXC close ratio is pretty tight spacing, but with the 300 I bet I could run a gear higher with no problems.

I think the KDX would suit the really tight woods better, but that 300 would sure rip in open terrain.

I also have to ride behind a couple of learning kids from time to time, so I am not sure that 300 would like that duty.

The KTM don't turn tight at all until 2006 (even then low speed turning is not as tight as a KDX) but I understand the 08 KTMs turn tighter than the 06s due to frame changes - have not driven a 08 KTM yet.
