Anyone ever make a custom 2-stroke pipe?

Post by Ondatrail »

This winter I'm customizing my old snowmobile with A-arm suspension so I can actually hit something and not go running for the IcyHot  . Putting this in will take all the room out of my front end where the pipe is so I'm going to make 2 (or one if im lazy  ) pipes that will fit n give the machine more punch. I made a sorry excuse for a pipe on my old RT180 (See Gallery) where I just took an IT200 pipe and tweaked it so it could fit. Has any one made a pipe or knows how they do it? Thanks

TSR has a program you can buy to design a pipe.

This is a site with usefull information concerning building a pipe.

EDIT - Whoops wrong pipe information - that is for RC planes. (Sorry I had an old list of websites (8) and they are all dead now.)

If you do a search on Snowest you'll come up with some useful information also. About 3-5 years ago I remember quite a detailed discussion with lots of good reference material/sites. But this is like suspension - you can dig yourself into a HOLE by information overload.

Some info. Keep in mind that sled pipes are vastly different from a cycle pipe. High clutch engagement, variable clutch (holds RPM), etc all come into play here. Basically they are a narrow-band pipe. No, I haven't built one....

Gotta go with an Artic Cat to get green!!! Have fun on the new sled.

We have snow in the mountains -enough for hunting - too much for biking - not nearly enough for sleding. Hopefully we will get dumped on Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb this year - Anyone listening up there!!?? :supz:

Kawi used to make sled engines. They were OK, but obviousely not good enought to sustain production. Speaking of green...John Deere used them.

We have an old Kawi 340 for sale in our town here, try to find parts though. John Deere's were sick! I'd take an old LiquidFire any day of the week!

I had a 1978 Kawaski 440 liquid cooled sled for a few years (about 70 hp)- knew a guy here who has/had an ~1980 Kawaski 550 Interceptor (about 90 hp). His was good for about 100 mph out of the box. The engines and clutches were great - the rest of the sled was pretty much the same as the other manufactures.

Make that about 55hp for the 2-carb h2o Kawi 440. The way mine was clutched it would only do about 70, but it got there quick and would carry the skis to about 40. 70 on that old leaf-sprung beast felt like 120 on a new sled...LOL. My bud's '80 Polaris XLT 340 2-carb h2o twin would do 90 stock, but was gutless down low. In a drag race he would over take me in about 1/2mi. I really liked that little polaris though. I ended up picking up a '82 (I think) 500, which was the same sled/engine + 1 more cyl. That thing was bad. Same factory characteristics, but I ended up clutching it to gain a lot more out of the hole, and top out at about 85-90....It would do over 100 stock, and was probably 70hp....Just had more a lot more torque to tune with. We eventually setup the lil 340 on alky a full port/head job/pipes, and it would take all of them. Sold them all before we started grinding on the bigger ones. MD pretty much quit getting snow.
