Dont really want to get into the argument of whether a rider should wear knee braces. At this point, as I get older, I am thinking of getting some good knee braces. Heard the better ones protect the knee cap well but risk breaking your femur. I can accept those risks.

The two high end knee braces that have caught my eye is the Fox Pod and the Asterisk Cell knee braces. Anyone have thoughts on what is better, more comfortable, protects better, etc.

I never use real knee brace like PodMx or Asterisk, so it's the best I can do for you.

It's like my EVS RC3 neck collar... not a real Leattbrace, but it's better than wear nothing.

I'm in the same boat you are, Steve. Recovering from ACL surgery and recognizing that I need to do what I can to prevent it from happening again. This is something I need to get figured out before next spring so this is near and dear . . .

You're right about it being a big debate. 'Seems there's evidence that a big enough hit could result in the brace causing a femur fracture. And a fracture on a bone that big carries a risk that includes fatality because of potential blood loss (that's the story I've heard). The problem with that logic for me is I don't consider myself being a high risk for receiving a whack in the leg devastating enough for the brace to break my femur bone. Maybe if I were doing 80' tabletops or triple jumps, but unlikely crossing logs and steams and climbing a few hills.

I've looked around at some advertisements but I'd like to start digging for as many reviews (thanks for your input plb). I know the health/fitness guy on thumpertalk recommends against knee braces (for the reason listed above) but frankly he's downright hard-headed about what he believes.

I've got some time (still not at work yet) and I'll see if I can't find some reviews tomorrow and Friday. In the meantime, do a little looking yourself and check back at this thread and let's see if what we can put together.

At first I was leaning towards the Asterisk Cell but after reading some the Fox Pod brace looks better. I like how the pod has a floating patella guard.

I completely agree about the pros vs cons of wearing braces. Almost most of the time, I am going 30 mph or much less in tight woods. I not overly concerned with femur break as I am with tearing ACL. I already have bad tendons and ligaments from snow skiing.

I was talking with Joe Hengeveld yesterday about knee braces. He's wearing some CTI braces right now (as close to a medical brace as you can get) and loves them. He says the Asterisks are next. He didn't say anything about the Fox stuff but warned against the EVS braces. He said that he's had multiple that broke without much force applied.

I really need some knee braces, I have horrible knees as it is. Damn you family genetics!

It's my link for PodMx because I wanted to know more about this product. But I not buy anything right now.

I haven't compared the two..it's not the sort of thing I'd buy two sets of to see how they work. I wear Asterisks. They are durable, well put together, and work well.

They have a floating patella cup. As I see it...they move around anyway.

Don't get the idea that a brace is going to keep you knee together no matter what....they won't. They will help...but if you're thinking they're some kind'a 100% effective protection against hyperextension..they aren't.

I can't count the number or times the Asterisks have saved my bacon. Knees, too!
