I'm back, but not on trails

Hey ya'll, Since June it has been too hot for me to ride. I got quite wiped out on a 94 degree day with high humidity and I was close to heat probation...prostration. So my wife got certified in scuba and we have been having a blast blowing bubbles in the cool water all summer.

Then the bad news came last Friday. The commie pinko gay whale humpin tree huggin granola eatin socialists fags successfully got our Apalachicola national forest shut down to riding. There is now no place for me to ride within 3 hours. The little land the USFS is allowing us to ride is 55 miles of trail packed in a 4x5 mile spec on the opposite side of the forest about another hour away. It is a joke. While I was on the internet I saw this motocross track about 40 minutes away and went out and watched Sunday. A lighted track. Hmmmm.

Oh yeah! Off came the kick stand, the GPS, the light switch, the KDX headlight and on went the moto rear fender, the KX front number plate, and boys, I had a blast today! I had to put the forks back down 5mm, to flush, to stop the knifing in the tight corners and added 3 clicks to the shock rebound cuz I tended to nose over bad on every jump. The adjustments worked nicely and I was able to keep up with a 5 year old on a 65. But he was FAST lil bugger!

Anyways, the KDX motor worked great pulling most of the track in 3rd. I never dumped it but did find myself looking at the front number plate before I fixed the rear kicking up during the launch.

I had a blast and I didn’t get lost 17 mile out in the middle of who knows where. There were no rocks or trees and the truck was never more than 300 yards away. I did about 8 laps total and I was whooped. I couldn’t hang on to the bars anymore. The owner is my age and this is his only job, runnin the track. His son offered to give me a moto lesson in “If yer not gunna roll the double like the kid on the 65, then stay on the gas and clear both vs splattering yourself into the face of the second by going a too slow”. Yes, this lesson should save a lot pain from me doing front number plate inspections. I don’t want to race, I will probably never race even in the “So old we used carbon dating to verify his age class” I just want to do thing right which is the easiest and safest way and play play play. It was more fun than I ever imagined. It had been since 1976 since I rode a serious moto track.

Screw the USFS and the Gay whales they rode in on!

Glad you're back on the green l'ittle monster
It always sadens me and piss me off when I hear about places closing down because of
commie pinko gay whale humpin tree huggin granola eatin socialists fags
(you forgot "SOB punk a$$ MOFO")
It's good to hear you still have a place to ride though even if it's a MX track, it's still better than nothing!

Tracks can be a blast. My son rides one of them 65cc screamers and he loves the tracks so I end up riding on them relatively often. I'm more sore spending half a day keeping up with him than riding in the woods all day, at least the USDs help . . .

sorry to hear your stompin' grounds are shrinking.

Buy some land and open your own trails. Easier said than done but wouldn't that be great.

Sorry to hear about the demise. I just started riding and if that happened to me, I think I would be able to come up with a few additional adjectives, nouns, and verbs to express my disgust.

But, I have to agree with scheckaet, a motocross track is better than nothing.

More reason to go into stealth mode. Quiet the bike down, camo you and the bike, and just ride. I bet they couldn't catch you. And if they do, we'll come visit every Sunday.

Hope you meant that in jest??!! Top reasons we are losing our riding areas are Noise, illegal riding (off approved trails) and lack of resources to fight the anti-access groups. Off my soap box now.

The USFS actions are a result of who they are most afraid of in the legal sense. They know that the extreme anti-American, anti-people, Earth first people crowd have huge pockets and can file injunction after injunction that the USFS can't afford to fight. So it is a cop out. After I am elected Emperor of the US, or Dictator El Supremo, I will eliminate their very existence and the land will then again be the peoples, except for them cuz they will be swimming with gay whales to China where they can enjoy their precious communism and socialism to the hilt.

Anyways, I was going to sell the bike and quit but the MX track revived my love for dirt bikes. I know I should have a YZ or KX but I don't. The KDX with the KX forks and the RM Showa shock are going to do. And they do well enough for me. This track actually has a 3 mile woods section for the Hare scrambles so I still get to hit trees.

I realize this is kind of old, but I just ran into what bradf was complaining about.

Here's a little boring background.
I used to be part of a KLR650 group that holds a big event in Wakulla every winter.
We had a ball running those big bikes thru miles of single track that the Apalach forest had to offer.
Well I sold the KLR and got a V-strom as I also liked to tour.
I really missed the single track and that lead to me getting my KDX.

This past weekend I took it over for the KLR event (talk about bringing a dagger to a sword fight) and we ran into closed track everywhere
On the plus side my KDX is plated so I was able to run the forest roads with the big bikes, but that gets old pretty quick.
We did run over to the "approved" area and it is tore up and crazy busy.

To make matters worse they have converted most of it to bicycle routes, hundreds of miles of bicycle routes.
All of which would not have been there if it was not for the motorcycles blazing the trails to begin with.

I am seriously bummed about this as I had planned on taking the KDX over there often.

bradf, I realize we are at opposite ends of this as I am in Panama City, but other than the track, have you found anywhere else to ride?

They are still riding at Nymph Lake Trail and due west of Tallahassee airport off of Blounstown Hwy (20). I am having a blast at Fast Track MX south of Cairo. We can still ride the App NF because the new trail designation system is not in affect yet. It might get delayed due to a court ruling in CA where the NF was found not in compliance with the law in that they didn't give motorized vehicles the due amount of trails they should have gotten. The FS was using the trail designation as a wipe out the OHV's and it got caught. There might be a change to the App designations now if the BRC gets involved. Now that hunting season is over it is wide open. You have a place to ride by Crestview off I-10 dontcha?

It was west of the airport where the "approved" area was, I'll have to ask my buddy if that was Nymph lake trail.

The rest of the areas south of Tally to Wakulla and many areas to the west had these red signs saying no motorized vehicles at every trail head we found.

I dont know of the area near crestview, are you talking about the the AFB.

I hope your correct that this will change.

Where are you getting your info about when the change is supposed to be in effect?
I am completely lost about this other than seeing the signs.

The Florida Trail Riders (FTR) and Tallahassee Trail Riders (TTR) had a big HS out by Chipley. All of the Wakulla area is closed. Go here:

This is the article describing the good news for everyone.

Closed 'cuz why?

Did someone find a fairy shrimp, spotted owl, wild salmon, or pacific weasel out in 'da woods?

Out here there's a move afoot to close a good hunk of beach (all owned by The State here) to ALL traffic..foot or otherwise. Why? Because some bird MIGHT make a nest there. They aren't there NOW...but they MIGHT be some day.

It's not 'in jest' any more. What obeying the rule on top of rule on top of some other rule is having NOWHERE to ride. The intent is NOT to regulate use is some 'sensitive' area..it is to ELIMINATE motorized access EVERYWHERE!

Screw 'em.

A Newt. As in "She turned me into a Newt"!
The environmentalist started the closure campaign when there was evidence of 4 wheel vehicles in the shallow ponds. There was never any evidence of motorcycle damage. If there would have been a bike in that close to the ponds they would still be there in over the bars in black muck. No bike group or responsible individual ever rode near that newt, possibly 2 newts. Only 4 wheelers. So the closures were the typical shotgun approach.
The classification of numbered roads is a nationwide task for all NF. and the USFS all over the US went way beyond the scope of limiting OHV to a limited amount of miles. Way too little to the point where here they gave us about 100 acres where we once had about 200,000. And get this. The Tallahassee Trail Riders bought a specialized trail groomer and paid for training for environmentally sound trail rehab techniques out of their own pocket. AND, the Apalachicola/Wakulla area FS refused REFUSED a $250,000 grant to help rehab the trails using the TTR people and equipment. They wouldn't have had to do any work, just supervise. And they lost the grant money because they didn't spend it. All because the environmentalist anti-public use scum have enough money to file injunctions.
This last ruling may have significant affect for all of us.
