I have a quick question that may result ( I hope) in long detailed answers.
I have an 04 KDX22R. Now why is there so much info on KDXs up to about 94 or even 03. I know they are no longer making them, but even as far as aftermarket upgrades go it seems that the newer years are really limited in what is available. That even seems to apply to tips and tuning tricks.
I've also looked at the spec sheets for the KDX 200, KDX 220 and the KDX 220R . What is the difference between these bikes other than displacement. Suspension? I've literally gone over the specs side by side and the only thing that Kawasaki lists is the engine being a bit bigger on the 220. What is the "R" in 220R?
These seem a bit trivial, but I'm simply curious.
I'm also planning on upgrading here and there as time progresses. I've already done the aftermarket levers, handlebars, air filter, picking up some new brush guards today ( stock plastic is okay for guarding against little stuff, but big trees will still smash the hands). New pipe is in the works in the near future. I'm looking at a Pro circuit. Anyone have any recommendations. I've heard the FMF tiorque is a good pipe for the 220. Then again, most of the info I read about is geared more towards the earlier models.

Boy, did you come to the right place.

I would like to say welcome back to riding! And know right off that your 2004 220R is the same as an 03 and even farther back. one of the best things about the KDX is that it is largely unchanged over the course of the years.

That being said... Most of the modifcations that are done to the KDX are Pipe, Carby, Head, and Forks. All of these yield amazing results. I would check out these places for modifcations:

Any part listed for a 220 form years 1997 to 2005 will work on your bike. Absolutely identical except for BNG (brand new graphics)

'H' model 200/220 differences: 35/33mm carb size (and therefore jetting), piston size (bore is different, stroke the same), port timing (port height, angle, etc). The 220 comes with an O-ring chain, the 200 does not. That covers it I believe.


The 220R was made from '97-05 (as stated)..according to the Kaw website.

The 220R is commonly referred to as a 220..dropping the 'R'. What does the 'R' stand for? I don't have an answer for that. There ARE 'R' bikes overseas that are NOT the same as stateside 'R' bikes. Presumeably an Arizona bike is a US bike. Wouldn't have to be. Overseas models (generally..maybe most of the time..maybe even always) are oil injected (no premix), smaller carbed than the US model, have a different lighting system, and 'dash' controls.

Pipe? Everyone has their own favorite flavor. The bulk of 220 riders use a REV FmF because the 220 (due to port design/carb size) tends to be weak on top. A PC (plain PC..no II or SST) is more akin to the FmF rev than the FmF torque profile.
