Fork size...in millimeters

Post by 1995KDX200mcs »

What is the stock size of the OD of the forks. I want to do a USD swap. I think the KX forks are 43mm. Is that correct. Is there no way of doing this using the stock triple trees. I read the USD thread and got lost with the shims and spacers.

No, you need KX triple clamps, regardless if you want to install 43 or 46mm KX USD forks.

If you think about it, the "fat" (housing) portion of the USD KX forks has to go where the "skinny" (slider) part of the stock forks are, so the difference is quite large.

Be patient, read all you can, it will come to you.

Would buying and modifying kx triple clamps be easier than having a machine shop make some to the kdx specs but allow 43 or 46mm

It would be much more costly to have a shop make custom ones.

It is really pretty easy, get some KX triples and forks, swap the steering stems (you need a press, a shop can do it for you), then all you need some shim stock and a washer (which can be the KX lower stem nut). I combined the shim stock and washer into a single machined piece, but it work either way.

There are only 15 pages of posts in the USD section, take an hour and looks through the post and look for "conversion recaps," that is what I did to learn about it. Don't worry, it will come to you.

Get some '96+ forks and triple tress including front wheel, caliper and master cylinder if you can.
There is an alternative to pressing out and swapping steering stems but it is not for everyone. The sole reason for swapping stems has to do with the upper bearing. Do a search on my name, you'll find a desription and drawing.
