KDX200 Odd Sound

New to 2 strokes.....

I notice on my 04 KDX200 that at idle the engine sounds a bit more "rattly" when the clutch is not engaged and vice versa?

Is this normal or should it sound the same regardless of whether or not I am pulling the clutch handle in?

The previous owner broke the original clutch handle and there is currently an aftermarket one on there. I am wondering if it was put on and not adjusted correctly.

Don't want to fubar anything :?

Thanks much

Kurt

When my bike is in neutral, it makes more rattling noise with the clutch out than pulled in. Like Hornet said, this is normal. Using a full quart of tranny oil helps some with the noise.

Ahhhh.....

Thanks fellas - one less thing to worry about. What tranny oil are you guys using? The guy I bought the bike from was using Castrol Synthetic 80W.

I recommend Honda GN4. I've used lots of different oils, including Bel Ray Gear Saver (and Castrol Syntec), and the GN4 has resulted in far fewer missed shifts. Pour the entire quart in and you are good to go!

Whatever oil you use, DO make sure it is NOT an 'energy conserving' oil. That will not do for a wet clutch.

Re: Use a whole quart..

My preference is to pour 1-150ml or so of the new quart in the bike with the drain plug still out to flush some puddled bits (there's always summa those) out of the case, then put the balance in after the drain plug is back in.

Notice the site update page? Inda named it, 'The KIPS Rattle' for a reason! 'Cuz that's what KDXs do...rattle. Don't know about the noise actually originating from the KIPS...but that's another matter.

Might be a good idea to check that clutch lever anyway. Not all levers work well with all perches.
