Hi All, I fear i haven't gotten the hang of the search function on this forum yet, i get soo many results no matter how many keywords i type in.

Can someone link me to a good walkthrough on the xr400 spring install? What should i use for spacers, how do i empty fork oil, what to use etc...

i'm a 190# rider. I got the .38 weight springs from a 98 xr400, not the .40's. I ride a lot of single track, little bit of track just for fun, any idea of a good fork oil and preload to go with. I'm thinking a 3mm preload.

I also have no idea how to get to the springs, that thread never said nuttin about it. This will be my first adventure with suspension.... any tips would be helpful.

The spring comes out of the top of the fork, you have a service manual right? There is a diagram in Jeb's post, and a on-line manual available.

no service manual, no owners manual, and the online manual is for the h-series.

ok i did it! Just wanted to make sure i did it right.

Took out old springs and top washers popped in new springs and top washers. Measured 61mm to the top of the fork, i made a 65 mm spacer which gives me 4mm of preload right? Definitely feels a bit better just from pushing up and down on it, took about 1/2 hr or so.

HOpefully tomorrow after work i can sneak some time to head out and try it on the trails! I didn't touch the fork oil, i figure one thing at a time.

You measured from the top of the spring washer to the bottom of the fork cap, with the cap threaded all the way down on the damper rod right ?

Sorry bro if I had a e-series I could help a little more, not sure how your fork configureation is. Sounds like your on the right track though. Spacer needs to be long enough to compress the spring the desired amount with the cap threaded in the tube.

So...where did the length of the fork cap go?

The information is in the threads listed. I just read them again to be sure you would have what you need.

That is correct.

The 'rod' (damper or not) referred to is the only piece you can see in there that the fork cap threads onto. Well, as opposed to INto. The question is written in such a way it explains itself.

Your spacer provides likely more preload than is needed...20mm or so.

Did you transfer the bottom clips off the old springs to the new springs?

If you didn't, your preload will be a bit more than you measured. (Understandment of that not necessarial)
