Help id. a part please. Reed valve

Post by StickyTeflon »

I've had my '98 kdx 220 for about 2 1/2 years but have only recently been riding regularly. (finishing school again, moving, new job, etc.) i'm the second owner of the bike and i didn't ask alot about the mods when i bought it.

I need help identifying my reed vale...

I just took the carb off to inspect it ( because i'm feeling more confident about working on it now) and took the reed cage out also to inspect it. It's not stock per the pic in the online service manual. It doesn't have the six curved metal "fingers" like stock, instead it looks to have two reeds per side. the bottom one has cut outs about 80% of the cage diameter and the top one covers the holes on the bottom one. It looks like its two stage???

Also, is there any way to know what pilot and main jet needles i have by just looking at them?

Thanks guys
Sean

Mods i know i have so far:
FMF KG 35 pipe with carbon fiber shield
FMF turbinecore 2 SA
Hinson clutch basket and plates
gold did oring chain
renthal bars cut short

I've added:
New gripper seat cover
black plastics
Clarke 3.6 Gal tank
seal savers

The jets have the sizes on them... gotta get 'em clean and look real close... they are stamped on the sides.

Reeds? Hmmm.... got a pic?

Sounds like a classic Boyesen to me.

Are they clearish fiberglas?

Boyesen 607s most likely.

I didn't spend a lot of time looking for a good pic...but this shows the overlay you are talking about...that Boyesen has.

I've never understood the 'dual stage' part of those (please...no explanations of how 'two' means 'dual'...MmmK?). I'm no airflow injuneer, but I don't get how the stage-2 part of that setup ever gets off the reed block.

When an outfit like MotoTassinari spends years and (probably) millions of dollars researching flow and reed effect..and they come up with a 'single stage' design, I gotta wonder about the 'two stage' design that Boyesen has used for years!

You are welcome StickyTeflon.
