Funny this comes up from time to time. In 02 I rebuilt my 88 KDX pretty much from ground up. I put over a grand into the bike after many years of good service. I rode her hard again for a couple of years until I found a smoking deal on a new 04. I sold the 88 to my brother and bought the 04. After the break in on the 04 we lined them up for a race on a long gas line road. My brother flat smoked me on the old 88. Pulled me right from the line and beat me by an 1/8 mile before we quit. It took a pipe, reeds, RB carb and head mod for me to finally beat the stock 88 (except for DG pipe)

Glad to see the interest in this topic. I have to say all this talk of fade out on the aircooled model is a little over the top. Sure it runs a little better on a cool day but even after 30 minutes riding there is very little difference. And just to make everyone shutter I have always used plain old Castrol mineral oil without any problems. This is why I love (yes love) this bike. I have searched far and wide but I just can't find a power rating for the C models. Can anyone help.

Another thing that makes the C series bike run better from what I can tell is the needle that they use. I posted this a while ago, any thoughts?

When I converted the needle code for a stock 88 back into a Keihin code it came out CCJ which would give a more MX like powerband than the BFQ needle that a H series 200 comes with. The CCJ is also pretty close to the recommended CGK for the 89-94 KDX's with stock carbs. With that info it makes more sense that stock to stock an 88 might have a better powerband than a 95+ KDX 200.
