New Top End Due

Post by 2001kdx »

I'm on the stock top end on my bike, so it's time to get a new one.

Should I go wiesco, and how much does it cost? I'm hoping it's >$150, cuz money is tight unitl I get a job.

Does this just consist of piston+rings+gaskets and kips cleaning?

why do you say you're due for a topend? Any loss in power / compression?
Question for everybody:
How often do you replace rings/piston/gasket? or is this more of a "seat of the pants" feeling?

* Today I popped the pipe off and the piston didn't look too bad. It might be OK for the moment So I'll hold off on the wiesco.

If you go with Wiseco here's the whole shootin' match - piston, rings, wrist pin, circlips, top-end gasket kit and needle bearing (upper rod bearing) . . .

$130.50 including shipping. I'm assuming since you're replacing the stocker that you'll be needing a std bore:

Put in a new top bearing, too. Didn't see that on the list.........

When? An '01 in '07 that hasn't had a topend job probably needs one.

Re: 'Every year if you ride a lot'

That would be on the cautious side a tad.

What you see up the exhaust port won't tell you much. If it looks BAD that's one thing...but if it looks GOOD, that doesn't mean much of anything.

What's the plating look like on the intake bridges? For that matter, what does it look like EVERYwhere? What's the blow-by look like on the pin axis? Is the cylinder round?

Don't 'see' any of that gazing up the exhaust port.

So I guess after 2 years of riding (30 miles a week on average), be a good idea to check things out.
Alright, I'll probably check it out when I send my head and carb to Ron.
Thanks guys

How about this? I'm out riding today, bike all warmed up, and a few times, I try to go WFO in 2nd or 3rd gear, try for max rpm's, and it stops revving at a certain point - it's as if the kips barely opens.
This has been happening for a few rides, I thought that kips is sticking closed.

I think I'll take the powervalve apart to clean. So... What do I need to buy, just to clean it up, given nothing is broken? I need to pull the jug right?
