FMF gnarly woods - needle question

Post by crf_kdx »

I ordered the FMF Gnarly Woods pipe from RMMC this weekend for my '05 KDX200. I'd like to have the appropriate jets and needles in my possession when it arrives. I have main jets 148, 150, 152, 155, 158, & 160 - I'm currently using 152. I have pilot jets of 45 & 48 - I'm currently using 48. I gather the stock needle for this model is R1174K - I have no other needles at this point.

The FMF Jetting Center for an '04 KDX 200 (interestingly they didn't list the '05 KDX200) states the following:

Main Jet: 155-160
Pilot: N/A
Needle: R1173L
Clip Position: 3rd
Air Screw: 1.5

Finally, my questions: (1) The above data from the FMF jetting center didn't seem to be specific to either the Woods or Rev pipe. So, is the above the "proper" information for both pipes? (2) Looking at OEM parts lists at Bike Bandit I see R1173K (200 option) as well as R1173L (220 option) for the '05 models. Is the above FMF info by chance a typo? That is, do I really want the R1173L for the woods pipe in 200?

Btw, I'm running the Boyesen 607 reeds in the bike. And the elevation here in KY is about 700' above sea level. (My son and I ride year 'round - so temps vary from 25 degrees to nearly 100!)

As always, thanks in advance for the wise words here!! (Btw, I realize this topic is an old and tired one but I wasn't bright enough to get the info I wanted from old posts here.)

1) Don't pay attention to the FMF jetting instructions. They are wothless if you ask me. Experimentation is the best method, so searching here can help, but we'll help to ballpark it for you. Also, look at the bike profiles and see what fellow 200 riders are using. I'm using 150/42, at 400'.

2) Do yourself a favore and order a keihin cel and del brass needle. They are, from my experiences, an instant power gain, and they come highly recommended. The bikes is much easier to jet with a decent needle in there.

I say you would end up 150/40. You MUSt get more pilots.

P.S - No website can tell you where to put the A/S with accuracy...

2001kdx: Your suggestion of strolling through the bike profiles here was an excellent one!! I've been hanging out here for 18 or so months and never bothered to look there. Simply an amazing resource!!!!! Btw, can you give me more specifics on the needles you suggest (e.g., part number)?

= = =

To save others the time in the future here is what I found for '96 -> '06 KDX200s w/o RB carb work (no regard for elevation or temps here - just the facts):

Pipe / Main / Pilot / Needle - clip position

FMF Woods / 152 / 45 / CEK-2
FMF Woods / 155 / 45 / Stock(1174)-2
FMF Woods / 150 / 40 / DEK-3
FMF Woods / 155 / 45 / Stock(1174)-1

FMF Rev / 155 / 45 / Stock(1174)-1
FMF Rev / 150 / 42 / CEK-2
FMF Rev / 150-155 / 38-42 / CEK-3

FMF Gnarly ??? / 155 / 45 / Stock(1174)-2

= = =

I think when my new woods pipe arrives I'll start with 152 Main (already in the carb), 45 pilot (48 is in the beast now and I'll try to obtain a 42 as well) and move the clip up on the stock needle a position or two. Then I guess it's ride and fiddle from there . . .

Forget all the posts with dek and cek needles! It means nothing to you,
DEK and CEK are for RB modded carbs only.
Start with getting one of two needles CEL for a more aggressive hit or
a DEL for a smoother wider power band. Any half decent bike shop should have em in stock for about 6 buck a piece.
Then work on your jetting. The CEL and DEL are RICHER on 1/8 to 3/8
throttle particularly the CEL.
Start on the third clip position.
Your 152 main is a good starting point but your 48 is most likely to fat.
I would start with a 42 if over 60 degrees on the pilot.
Do plug chops at wot and 3/8 throttle to check your work.
I think 2001KDX is pretty close to where you end up.

Thanks TWMOODY . . . I hadn't processed that the DEK / CEK needles were associated with the RB modded carbs.

I placed an order today with Pat's Small Engine (http://www.psep.biz/) for the CEL & DEL needles as well as 140 & 145 MJ and 40 & 42 PJ. I was told to expect the goodies in 5 to 7 days - sadly, after the new woods pipe arrives but still in a reasonable time frame. Neither of the local bike shops (either Kawi or Honda) were even able to order the CEL & DEL needles - go figure.

Sorry to have beaten a dead horse with this thread . . . a bit more digging via the search feature yielded a wealth of useful information.

No problem. Wait till you get the woods pipe. It will completely change the jetting. Good luck.

as well as 140 & 145 MJ

You will likely need to order a new piston and ring using a 145 or 140
among other things !!!!!!!
You are about the same altitude and a couple degrees warmer than
here and those main jets could get you in trouble FAST

Okay - a new piston and ring got my attention!! So, I gather 140 & 145 MJs are simply way too lean then?? They were only $3.75 each . . . no great loss if I never use 'em.

You will likely not have a main less than 150

Humm...I ran dek and cek in a stock 35mm carb. Worked good. Of course you'll need a #7 slide
yah - it's just easier to say rb = DEK CEK and stock = DEL CEL

Even better to say:

E series (89-94) = CGK, DGK
H series 200/220 (95-06) = CEL, DEL
RB carbs (any year) = CEK, DEK
