stabilizers

Post by OldRedd »

This may sound like a dumb question, but what exactly does a stabilizer do? And why are they SO EXPENSIVE?

They're for old farts who get tired of holding on to their bike after 15 minutes of riding.

Kidding! IDK either...

I just slapped a used one on $225.00.
(Supply and demand).

Where I practice weed trees grow, If I didnt get down on my knees
and saw them down as close to the ground as I could,I would feel the bars
trying to be yanked out of my hands as I glanced off of them as I rode past. (1" in Dia)
No Longer. With the Stabalizer I saw them off 6" up and plow right past them,Never Feeling A Thing!

An old timer told me recently all they did ( 70's) Was precisely crank down on the Head set (Wearing the bearings out early ) but acheiving somewhat the same thing .

Stabilizer, damper, dampener, what ever you call 'em;
They keep trail objects from deflecting your front wheel. Works just like the stabilizers on 4X4's. The best are adjustable for amount of dampening as well as having zero damp on return-to-center, and also stop dampening at some point past center. That last is used when you intend to turn your bars from lock to lock in tight situations and don't want to fight a dampener the whole way. If your dampener hasn't dampened in the first few degree's then it's not gonna matter anyway.

Best thing for anyone considering a dampener is to download an owners manual and read how to adjust and set one up. That should get you knowledgeable on their operation.

they keep the front and rear tracking true. or keeps the rear tire following the front by not allowing the front to jump spasticly around at speed hitting objects in the trail, thus causing the rear to try to follow this spastic front tire and putting the rider in a place of discomfort.

(Sigh)

Damp: to check or retard the energy, action, etc., of; deaden; dampen

Dampen: to make damp; moisten

If you speak English, this will help you use the correct usage of the above terminology. Otherwise, if you want your steering dampened, take out the hose and apply water liberally. If you want it dampered, get a WER, Scott's, or that other one they don't make for the KDX (I asked).

Or, just use the Steering Stabilizer terminology.

Class dismissed.

Ski, I wasn't ripping on you, personally. I apologize if that was the assumption. :prayer:

What I was hoping to inspire, was a newbie on the correct terminology so he doesn't incur the wrath of other Grammar Nazis. I'm sort of one, since my Mother has a Masters Degree in English - I was grilled as a child and required to hand in my homework and papers to my mom, who was more of a critic than my teachers!

My only goal is to encourage posters to use proper grammer. It does help, and is easier to read.

Ride-On! :supz:

I'm right. I'm always right. If the world does things different, then the world is wrong. This is very important to remember.

damp·en (dăm'pən)
To deaden, restrain, or depress

Damper
a mechanical device in a flue or chimney that regulates airflow
a food of the Australian Outback
A device in various keyboard instruments for deadening the vibrations of the strings

Now apologize again immediately or I will get annoyed.
