KDX Flywheel

Hi,

I own a 1987 KDX200 (C2) which has the usual broken flywheel magnets problem. I need some advice please..

I have purchased a NOS replacement which is almost identical apart from 1 thing, it has 4 magnets on it, rather than 3.

The part will physically fit, but i reluctant to fit it in case my CDI and coil are damaged through incorrect voltages etc..

Do we have any electro boffins reading this forum who can say if fitting this part will cause any issues?

More magnets in your bike will not hurt electrically. As long as physical clearances are maintained, give it a try.

If it was a motor, then the # of magnets will correspond with the # of poles in the motor.

When you say physical clearances, do you mean the gaps between the magnets? Or simply that the flywheel will not hit other engine components?

The reason that i ask, is that i was concerned that the gap between the magnets acts as like a timing signal to the CDI, or am i wide of the mark?

OK,

I decided to go the "Balls Out, no fear approach"!!

The answer to my question is a three part one.

1) It does physically fit
2) It wouldnt start with the new flywheel
3) It didnt do any damage when i refitted the old flywheel with the JB welded magnets!

The search for the correct flywheel continues.. If anyone has one for sale, please let me know as they are like hens teeth.

I read somewhere that a flywheel from a 86 87 or 88 Tecate will fit. Is this true?

You can get them on ebay from Ricky Stator but they wont confirm if this is true or not.

Anyway, please let me know about the flywheel.

That's my understanding. In the case of the KDX anyway. I wouldn't expect a different magnet configuration to work. Some rotor/stator assemblies have a separate slug that acts as a trigger to the spark box. That is NOT true in the KDX to my knowledge.

NOS meaning New Old Stock, why would the new stock one be different from yours? Well, unless it isn't for the same model.

Don't know that JB will or will not be an acceptable/suitable epoxy. I thought RickyStator fixed the old ones?

..not that they are exactly close by or easy to use as a vendor from across the pond.

The Tecate question? No answer a'tall from me.

Yes it was a New Old Stock model.

I bought it from ebay, but it was correctly listed as a 1981 KDX250 flywheel.

I only bought it as a gamble because it was $20!

The problem with sending a part to RS is that i live in the UK..

I haven't looked, but maybe a check of part numbers for your bike on other model parts lists would yield some crossover matches.

Your epoxy job will last forever..so might as well not even worry about it! :wink:

Thanks guys.

Ive checked on my Kawasaki parts guide, the only compatible ones are 86 87 or 88 KDX200 models.

I guesss that i'll stick with the epoxy'd job then!

No, I don't know why it just occurred to me...

I sent FRP an email. I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

More BTW..but we have a real good cycle salvage yard in the valley: Bill's Cycle Salvage. Called them. 'Oh, the ones the magnets come out of?' he said.

..but, he doesn't have one! :sad:

I may have a flywheel for a 87. I will have to check my bushel o parts.
Is it hard to ship to UK?
